• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. :wave:Hi. I am wondering your opionions of Lexapro and if possible what your dosage is. I am on 20 mg. and feel better than when I was on Prozac. I am eating a lot, though, and that concerns me. I am a problem eater at times anyway, though, come to think of it. But it seems sometimes I have to buy junkfood. Maybe this will pass. I have been on it now for 46 days. I really don't need to gain any more weight. I am already about 30 pounds overweight. But I have lost weight in the past and should be able to again.

I am also going through grief of my father's death. I lost him last month and it's hard. I managed to have a good cry the other day and know there are more tears to come but they don't come easy for me these days. I cried at the funeral. Imay be eating a lot for this reason, too, I don't know. These different factors make things so complicated it seems. Looking forward to hearing opinions on Lexapro. Thank you.

Hi Ruth:

I lost my father in 1994 and it was a very difficult time for all of his children and his wife (mom). Dad and Mom were High School sweet hearts, so she had been with him for a long, long time.

Takes several years to get over the pain. It gets less and less. YOu will always miss him although. I still miss my Dad. Lot of memories I have of him.

I tried lexapro but it didn't work on me. Made me a zomby. I'm on Celexa which has been wonderful.

Hang in there. Time heals emotional pain.

God's peace to you,
Kim

I took Lexapro, and possibly because of the fact that I wasn't eating over 1000 cals a day at that point, it didn't work for me. I was on Prozac as well, which didn't work either (no antidepressants have). But I'm glad to hear that it's working for you. It DID make me gain some weight, so make sure you exercise if you feel that you are gaining.

Hi,
I took lexapro 10mg then 20mg for about 1 1/2 years. I actually lost weight while taking it! My husband said he didnt like the way I "acted" on lexapro and I was extremely tired all the time so I switched to effexor.

I ahve been on Lexapro for 3 years, and have never felt better.
Dislike the side effects when I miss a dose. But works better then anything else I have tried.
My wife makes sure I get the refills. She (and I can't stand myself when I don't have it.)

Dearest Ruth,
I don't think I was on Lexapro long enough to know if it worked or not. I am like soulwings, as no antideppresant has ever worked for me. I am now on Effexor XR which by itself did nothing to help till a wise pdoc added another med and I have seen (and so has my family) and felt myself improving.

It amazes me to this day how antideppresants (or any med for that matter) effect everyone differently. One gets tired and another on the same med is energized

And just to add to your working through your grief...don't worry about the tears...they'll come when they need too!!
 s to you

Thank you InhisgripKim, Soulwings, Sarahleo, Billnew, and WanttoBe for your kind replies. I am still on the Lexapro at 20 mg. I think I would feel a lot worse if I werent' on it, actually, I know I would. I really have to watch what I eat now. I've gained some weight and don't need to gain any more. I can't say what's making me want to eat for sure. I just know I have to be more careful about what I eat since I have had high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

I have cried some since my dad died and have felt very sad at times. I also have good moments. I don't focus on it every waking minute or else I'd be very depressed. There are times when I allow myself to feel the sadness intensely. Having major depression, though, I have to keep trying to keep on going and get things done that I need to do, too.

I currently take Lexapro 20 mg and I personally love the stuff. If it wasn't for my Lexapro, I'd be incredibly moody. I have both major depression and borderline personality disorder. I still have mood swings but my psychiatrist may put me on an anti-psychotic to help stabilise the moods.

:wave:Spiritfilled, I'm glad Lexapro is working for you along with the anti-psychotic. I am also taking another medicine as a mood stabilizer. I am taking Geodon-40 mg. Without those 2 meds I know I'd be having constant panic and in the pits. I thank God for these meds. God bless you.

Hello, Ruth.

I have been on Lexapro for depression and anxiety since January and am now taking the 20 mg dose as well. My side effects are usually mild (weird dreams and some drowsiness). I don't know if it can affect your appetite, but otherwise it won't actually make you gain weight like some other depression meds can.

Taking this medicine has made an amazing difference in my mentality. My family, friends, and even a professor notice how much happier I seem.

It has also been an enormous help to see a counselor. They determined that I have had a chemical inbalance probably all my life, and I have felt depressed for years. The counselor has helped me work through all the emotional damage I did to myself because I did not know how to deal with my perceived inadequancies and my failures when I was in that state.

It's still a daily struggle to overcome bad feelings toward myself, and some days are better than others. If you are like me you might notice that you feel considerably worse around your period. It's not as bad as it used to be, however.

Good luck to you as you continue your journey. I join you in thanking God for these meds. I used to wonder why He never gave me help when I cried out for it, but now I realize that He needed me to have the courage to seek out that help myself.

Battie,
Thanks for your reply. I just now saw it. I'm glad Lexapro is working for you. Counseling can really help together with the medicine, for sure. I am now on 30 mg. of Lexapro because of recent symptoms I've had. We'll see how this works out, I just started the 30 mg. dose. I noticed I feel more anxious and hungry around my period time. So, yes that's true. I hope you continue to do well!

I am taking Lexapro and I am on 10 mg. I took three because I just didn't care. It made me thirsty not hungary.

I've been on Lexapro for almost two years now, 20mg. The first two or three weeks were really hard, but now, I feel good.( Except if you're off it for more than a day, ) It has really helped with the anxiety and the depression. I've found though that it get worse around my periods though too. I thank God everyday for the miracle of medicine
