Lev 9:22
Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings.
Lev 9:23
And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people,
Lev 9:24
and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.
Lev 10:1
THEN Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.
Lev 10:2
So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.
Lev 10:3
And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke, saying:
'By those who come near Me
I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people
I must be glorified.'"
So Aaron held his peace.
Ive read several commentaries on this account; the general consensus is that these two men, the sons of Aaron, did something on their own they were not asked or prescribed to do and may have been puffed up by the consecration of their new positions taking things into their own hands. Yes, if the Lord Himself brought down fire to consume an offering and I saw it Id be excited too but is a picture of why we dont worship God any old way we feel chapter 10 verse 3 says I must be regarded as Holy this means that worship must be led of the Holy Spirit and although we are free in the Spirit, we are still within the bounds of the Spirit.
1Cr 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
2Cr 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty.
So true liberty is not doing whatever we want or feel feelings are not to be acted on they are there to tell us if something is right or wrong what we do about it is prescribed in Gods Word & advice from Godly counsel that lines up with it.
Also, look at chapter 9 verse 24 .fire came out from before the Lord this is the Lords fire the Lord has kindled the fire on this altar Aarons sons use fire from somewhere else some other motive some other desire not of God, hence the term strange fire.
This is obviously pretty serious that we take heed to this and pay attention in our lives, not to draw attention away from the Lord in our worship of Him. Aaron evidently understood this and so should we. My prayer is that Gods people today dont have to understand it with the detriment and tragedy that he experienced by losing his sons.
