  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Letting go
Without grace, we do create ourselves, freely some of the time, and from compulsion, which while not sin, does the same damage. There is no need to fear this knowledge since the truth does set us free. The paradox of the spiritual life is that the more the light grows in us, the more we see our need for healing, mercy, and compassion from God. This frees us from becoming obsessed with ourselves, and learn over time, often after much suffering, to simply trust in God’s love for us.

We are called to allow the reality, and the presence of Jesus to live in us, through us, in spite of our failures. It is humility that allows us to let go, and as the saying states, to let God. -Br.MD

Compulsion is the hardest thing. I read a biblical text recently, can't remember which verse or anything, but to me it stated roughly along the lines of saying that - when the author sinned, it wasn't really him sinning, it was his body and/or mind doing it, and that his soul was repulsed by it, even as he did it. The main point, as far as I could tell, was that it was his relationship with God that allowed him to see his wrongs, even though he was under the influence of bodily compulsions.

I like how you say these are not necessarily sins. Because some people *do* need to hear that! But to go on and admit the fact that they are indeed damaging still, that is true! And those who experience it will understand that clearly.

Thank you, Br. Mark.

That was St. Paul, who talked about all of our struggles. Healing, growth, and inner freedom can be a long journey. That is why trust in God's love is so important for us to hear.

Peace
