  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just received a letter from our 14 year old on a mission trip to Vanuatu (in the South Pacific) - please continue to keep him and his team in prayer as they work to repair the hospital there.

Mom and Dad,

I'm in Vanuatu now! It took a long time to get here, but I made it safely. After I called you guys in L.A., we took our flight to Malaysia a while later. First, we flew to Taiwan, and we made a stop there (I guess to refuel the plane and all that.) Then we flew to Malaysia. We stayed in a hotel there for a few hours. It was nice, but I didn't know that the drinks in the fridge in our rooms weren't free. So, I had to pay $2.00 for a little can of Sprite. Wow! Never again.

From there we flew to Brisbane, Australia. It was so nice there. There were showers in the bathrooms at the airport. So, I took 2 long showers since we had a long layover. It (the airport) had a lot of shops and stores, but our leaders said things will most likely be cheaper at debrief (although I was still tempted to get a really cool looking boomerang).

From Brisbane we flew to Port Villa (an Island in Vanuatu), and from there things kinda got tricky. The flight from Port Vila to Espiritu (translated: Holy Spirit) Santo (another island) was scheduled at a certain time and we got to the airport early (after staying in a local church for a ... good ??? night's sleep). However, they said that we would have to wait for another flight because we missed ours by a few hours, which, according to our ticket we were right, but ... what can you do? So, we waited, and then realized we couldn't fit all our luggage and all of our people on the tiny little propeller plane that we were going in. So, 10 people (9 girls and 1 guy - guess who the guy was) including me ventured to the next island.

Boy the little plane was scary (all 20 seats). The pilot just turned around to tell everyone the safety instructions.

It was cool when we actually got to the island, though. They served us lunch (sandwiches, bananas (really good), and coffee - or maybe tea? ) Then, some kids (about 5) were walking by on a nearby street. So, we invited them to play ring-around-the-rosy. Next thing we knew ... we had about 80 kids, and we were singing, playing games, and just having a great time. It was awesome!

After spending the day there, our team arrived minus 15 (10 personal) duffels. Then, the next morning, we took a 4 or 5 hour boat ride to Ambae. When we got to the island, we anchored down, and a little boat came back and forth from the big boat to the island taking duffels and people and dropping them off. Then, we've been unpacking, setting up tents, receiving duffels that didn't make the first group (including mine - finally!), swimming in the ocean, and lots more. I'm having a GREAT TIME.

Talk to you later,

Joey

There were a lot of smiley faces interspersed throughout this letter but this forum won't allow all of them, so I didn't include them.

To Lily:

I'm just in AWE over this fantastic opportunity for your son! He sure sounds like a very bright kid with his head securely fastened to the tops of his shoulders. The laugh about the honor bar was cute, but what blew me away was his enthusiasm to just play with a bunch of kids he encountered.

The mission trip is certainly blessed by his presence, and you are blessed to have such a wonderful son.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

Wow!  You son sounds like an extremely intelligent and caring young man.  He is awfully well written for someone his age.  It is so nice to hear about young people like your son who take joy in improving the lives of others.  He is truly an inspiration to us all.  I pray that God will keep him safe and bring about miraculous things through the ministry he is involved in.

His attitude is a testament to the the wonderful job you have done in bringing him up in the admonishion of the Lord.

God bless.

Michelle - he will be in Vanuatu until August 7th, then they travel back to Brisbane, Australia for a "debrief" (another word for retreat) with the other teams in the area - fun, games, skits about their adventures, sightseeing, and preparation for their return home (sometimes the culture shock is greater coming back home than going to another country) :) He will be home the day on the 17th (the day before he turns 15).

OneSheep - I can't wait for the next installment, too!!! LOL

Avila - thanks for the continued prayers - I know they will make a difference.

Reformationist - thanks for the compliments - He does quite well in school and I have personally spent time with him on his writing skills - I am delighted that he remembered to include DETAILS :D

I give God all the glory on how well my children have turned out - He has been a major, active part in their upbringing. :)
