  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It was a hot, steamy, October Friday night in south Georgia. My friend, Nancy, and I decided to go to the high school football game. Even though our team was in a rebuilding mode, the game that night was with our arch rival....the Herons.

My hometown, although quite small, does have a McDonalds, so I suggested to Nancy we pull in there and get a burger and some fries. As we drove into the half-empty parking lot, I was thinking we could get our meal really fast. We parked and walked inside....alas, the dining area was full of kids...Herons from Brantley County! They had parked their cheesewagons (school buses) around the corner. Well, waiting in line was a hopeless proposition, so I told Nancy we would go to the Rockin' Bear cafe..they had good homecooked burgers and cherry-vanilla cokes.

As we entered the cafe, I noticed a six-pack of cops sitting at one of the tables, drinking cokes and eating burgers. I told Nancy that was about all the police we had on the force. Well, we ate our burgers, and drove the two miles to the football stadium.

The crowd was pretty big...it was homecoming for our Bears, and the band was playing. The mood was set as the strains of the Star Spangled Banner slowly drifted into the humid air.

The preacher prayed (yes, down in south Georgia, we still pray before football games), and..............

You finish the story

Nancy and I luckily found a couple of seats very close to the 50 yard line and just a few rows up. As we sat down, everyone else jumped to their feet as the Bears came charging onto the field. The excitement reached a crescendo when suddenly, the Bears lead player, Billy Joe Mc Callister, came into view. It became deafeningly loud as the audience began to stamp their feet.

Billy Joe was lucky to be playing that night. Everyone in the stadium knew about his fight with cancer......

It started about a year and a half ago, When Billy Joe's mom took him to the doctor for his check-up. The doctor took a few routine blood tests and x-rays. A few days later, Billy's mom got a phone call from the doctor. She knew it wasn't good news, because the doctor asked her and Billy Joe to come to the office, so he could go over the results with them.

Yes, Billy Joe, the strapping six foot, 220 pound fullback/linebacker had a rare form of cancer. After the doctor gave them the bad news, Billy Joe and his Mom (he had no Dad because his Dad died when he was 14..His dad was a preacher), joined hands and prayed that the LORD's will be done.

Well, living in that small town was a man who had the reputation of being a praying man. This man was a little eccentric and had suffered much adversity in his life, but people always called on him to pray. Billy Joe and his Mom were sitting at their kitchen table, eating some fried chicken, when they heard a knock on the door. Billy Joe opened the door, and there stood Elmer, the man who could pray. Elmer said "Billy Joe, the LORD sent me over here to pray for you. He is going to heal you of your cancer. By the way, your Dad and I have had many seasons of prayer together, and I remember your Dad praying for you and dedicating you to the LORD." About that time Billy Joe's mom
entered the room, and Elmer said "Let us hold hands and pray." The words that came out of Elmer's mouth were simple, and came from his heart. He prayed, "O LORD God, Billy Joe has came down with cancer. You, O LORD, can speak the word, and he will be healed. Remember, too, O LORD, the prayers of D.J. (Billy Joe's dad), and send Your healing touch." About that time, an overwhelming love filled the room, and the LORD touched Elmer, Billy Joe, and his mom. They knew at that moment, that the LORD had healed Billy Joe.........
