  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I made a personal commitment to stop watching TV many years ago. As a result, there are some things that I miss. The biggest one is regular detailed national weather reports. I get my weather reports online, but they tend to be subjective to the opinion of the meteorologist responsible for the report; and those guys are often incorrect with their opinions.

I like to see what is happening for myself, to gain a better understanding of what might be to come. I like to see where the low pressure is, where the jet stream is and where the fronts are. I miss that from the TV reports.

Well I recently stumbled onto a meteorologist who has a Youtube channel. He spends considerable time detailing the weather for North America. He gives much more detail than I have ever seen on TV; and I'm learning much more, on what factors drive our weather, than ever before.

This guy's work is outstanding!

I just watched most of the recent forecast -- interesting. Fun to imagine what that -107F wind chill would be like in Oymyakon (which I notice has a claim to be generally the coldest city in the world). I'd guess one just doesn't go out in it, but if needed, I'd guess you'd need googles and full face covering, or maybe best is a face mask like a deep sea diver. Maybe something somewhat like a space suit. heh heh

I think I got the thing for you. A few years ago my dad got into Ventusky. That website is like your one stop shopping for everything weather, they got everything even wave conditions and it is all streaming. It kind of reminds me of a big virtual reality computer game, or I think it of as the game for folks that don't like other virtual reality simulations. My dad loves to fiddle with it, checking out the wind at various elevations and so on, on his office desktop.

That is so cool....unfortunately it says that my area is supposed to spend 72 straight hours below zero at the end of next week. I hate global warming.

If you're in the US, try the National Weather Service site at National Weather Service The US National Weather Service issues forecasts by zones. Unless a television or radio station has a real meteorologist, what you get in local weather is usually the NWS Zone Forecast for the studio location.

If you're in a region subject to hurricanes, this is a good resource: National Hurricane Center

OK that's good that you saw future news and predictions for your area. My dad said you can get 10-day forecasts from it and I did not see how you could do that. I moved cross country from PA to California two months back, and my friends "gaming laptop" I'm using is a little more limited than my old desktop (I tried to get it to scroll ahead in time and it seemed to cough and sputter).

I'm a runner and since I don't like to miss a day, radar maps are great for precisely pinpointing where and when it's raining on days where the chances are "iffy". I can start a run early before rain gets to me, or know if I can wait till it passes. I've used them to start a run right when I see the rain has passed over my house, ha ha. If the rain's moving south, I can run north, or vice versa. It's not perfect because with the right general conditions something could always develop overheard quickly, but in many years I've only been caught once in a brief, light downpour.

Lots of weather sites have live radar, but I refuse to use Weather Underground. Naming your company after a Leftist terrorist group is not cool.

I use Weather Underground for my 10 day forecast for one reason, the forecast includes an easy to read graph of the wind. Where I live the wind is everything, without that the rest of the forecast is almost pointless. It can be sunny and 75, but if the wind is blowing at 40mph it makes most everything difficult.

On my PC you just go down to the timeline at the bottom of the page, at the beginning of which is a dropdown menu for day/date. Then just pick the day you want and scroll across the timeline.

Let's Talk About the Weather

30 October 1991: The Halloween Monster, a.k.a. The Perfect Storm, strikes the U.S. amid the "land-for-peace" Madrid peace talks; President Bush's ocean-side home destroyed.

23 August 1992: President Bush moves Madrid talks to U.S. soil; that very day, Hurricane Andrew devastates southern Florida.

16 January 1994: President Clinton meets with Syrian President Hafez Assad to discuss more "land for peace" arrangements; less than 24 hours later, a 6.9 earthquake pulverized southern California.

1 September 1993: President Clinton announces a meeting with Arafat for the Oslo peace accords, to be held on 13 September; after a week of meandering in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Emily hits North Carolina on that very day.

21 January 1998: while waiting to meet with Arafat at the White House, President Clinton's sex scandal breaks out.

27 September 1998: Arafat is meeting with the president in Washington; Hurricane Georges hits Alabama and stalls. The hurricane stalls until Arafat leaves and then it dissipates. Parts of Alabama declared a disaster area.

17 October 1998: Arafat comes to the Wye Plantation meeting; incredible rains fall on Texas, which cause record flooding. Parts of Texas declared a disaster area.

3 September 1999: Secretary of State Albright meets with Arafat in Israel; Hurricane Dennis comes ashore on this very day after weeks of changing course in the Atlantic Ocean.

12-26 July 2000: Arafat at the Camp David meetings. Powerful droughts throughout the country. Forest fires explode in West into uncontrollable fires. By the end of August, 7 million acres are burnt.

9 November 2000, two days after the presidential election: Arafat meets with President Clinton at the White House to try and salvage the peace process; worst election crisis in over 100 years occurs.

Psalm 83:15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.

I live in the great lakes and we have our own weather here. The national weather has a little but not that much impact on us. Buffalo New York gets hit the hardest. It is common for them to get 5 feet of snow. Although in Utah they can get up to 26 feet of snow in the mountains and somehow they manage to clear the roads.
