I want to start by telling you this, something I've read, that emotions can be made into idolatry:

Some people can be sick and actually start to 'enjoy' the feeling of self-complain or attention this way, loving themselves by complaining... Not saying you are, I don't know you, but this is something that is happening to some.
...Then your emotion is an idol.

I believe the same can be the case, if we seek emotional experiences [joy, peace etc], and so, if we aren't seeking God by love, and loving for WHO he IS, and what he has done for us. He is truly WORTHY of all WORSHIP, praise, honor and thanksgiving.

Also, the same shall be during worship. It should be focus on God, worshipping and loving him for WHO he IS, in love from the heart, not expecting anything back. That is TRUE worship in SPIRIT & in TRUTH.

John 4:23-24
23 A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.

24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).

________________________________________________________________
It says MUST worship Him in spirit and in truth. Also, if there are true worshippers, there are also false.

Mark 12:30
And you shall love the Lord your God out of and with your whole heart and out of and with all your soul (your life) and out of and with all your mind (with your faculty of thought and your moral understanding) and out of and with all your strength. This is the first and principal commandment.

1 Corinthians 16:14
Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God's love for us).

While it is true that worship is really powerful, in breaking in strongholds, chains, and such, in spiritual warfare, and that it often brings joy, peace and healing, it must be done in spirit and in truth.

Often, this is the case when you feel you are in darkness/trial or so, and everything feels hopeless and so. The case could actually be that God feels distant, because he wants you to seek him. Such times are when worship is really powerful, and it can truly touch God's heart, and bring him to tears. I've read this in a book.

Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him.

Psalm 32:11
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you [uncompromisingly] righteous [you who are upright and in right standing with Him]; shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

I really enjoyed reading your points, Jonathan, but I'm not sure that emotional masochists/gripers "enjoy" always playing the victims or complaining as much as they derive some "fix" or payoff from emotionally binging and purging. Their brains tell them "No binge (anger, hostility, self-pity, etc.), no purge (reconciliation, reconnection with God, attention, etc)." These vicious cycles are often passed down generation to generation. One thing's for sure, though, and thanks so much for reminding us of it: Being open to The Holy Spirit can break these vicious cycles. He is the supreme psychologist.
