Meh. I much prefer following the Tweets of Kim Kierkegaardashian, who retweeted Jon Lovett's response to Rubio's comment:View attachment 165663

You have 14,396 unreal e-mails, in your inbox? How do you have so many?
Your degree will be in philosophy, yes? I am fairly certain, this is what you said, you are studying. Did you think, the comments Marco Rubio made, about philosophy majors, were rude?
+1. Strongly agree. I majored in philosophy, but later went on to study neuropsychology, in line with my academic passions. My philosophy major was looked upon favourably when it came to finding a supervisor for a research project. More than that, however, I found philosophy to be intellectually enriching in its own right. I'm glad I opted to make it one of my majors, and I hope you consider making it one of yours.I have not declared my major but have unofficially decided to seek a B.A. in Philosophy with a core interest in Political Philosophy and Ethics, and a coterm degree (masters degree pursued while an undergraduate) in International Policy Studies. One of the reasons I view Rubio's comments as myopic is that many people who major in Philosophy do not become philosophers. It expands and edifies the mind and makes it more fertile for rigorous graduate studies in a diversity of fields. I know several young graduates who earned joint degrees in CS + Philosophy and are already flourishing in their careers, and earning enviable incomes. Others have gone on to excel in medical school, in elite engineering programs, and in other academic or career endeavors. Philosophy majors tend to perform exceptionally well on the LSAT required for law school admission in the United States. That's always been my ultimate academic goal. I've never intended to become a philosopher. I actually want a job like Rubio's one day.
I feel aged by the fact that I first typed lol a year before you were born.
Lol. For real?![]()
In 1998. On something very dark which is now or or less a bad memory known as "AOL."
I feel blessed by the way in that I was not an Internet user in the early 1990s when the Net was opened up to commercial use in an event of great horror known as "Eternal September." In that things actually did get better for me, whereas I suppose for the rarified academics who used the Internet before that time (largely on UNiX and VAX/VMS midrange computers) the shock would not be the sort of thing recovers from.
