  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Let's talk about Lent. It's that time of year again. Are you doing anything for Lent?

I've never done anything for Lent. Last year I attended a Methodist church and it made me want to participate in Lent, but I was so new to a liturgical church that I thought I'd hold off. I plan to attend another liturgical church soon, but recently have only been attending contemporary service churches that may or may not even discuss it. The church (Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination) I grew up in didn't talk about Lent and I didn't even know much about it until I was in my mid-20s. It's getting close, but I have yet to decide what of anything I shall do for Lent, because I do like the focus on more spiritual matters and maybe giving something up, but I haven't been paying attention and this has snuck up on me.

I do.

On a personal level i'm stripping back my diet to the bare basics (rice, vegetables, water) and increasing the amount of time spent in contemplation per day. Which goes hand in hand with a reduction of recreational internet/television time. I want to say i'll do something else, but I won't, this year I just have too many deadlines to fit in to do anything but fast and pray.

I don't. I actually knew nothing about Lent growing up; and I grew up in a Methodist church (go figure; I also don't ever remember hearing anything about salvation). I went to a college that was non-denom. but almost strictly CMA faculty/staff/ and students so nothing was said about it. I'm fairly ignorant on Lent; but what I do know I like the idea. My MIL has the idea of giving out a bible to someone for 40 days and I like that alot so I guess I will pray about it and research it and see what happens.

I never did anything for Lent before, but during an almost 2 hour phone conversation with my best friend we decided to give up a couple things during Lent that might be hindering us, different for each of us.

My husband dislikes the idea of lent, he thinks that your life should be moderate all the time and if you need to fast for some cause then it ouht to be a complete fast. He's not telling me not to do anything for lent but he still thinks it's useless. Well he's gone to a pentecostal church for quite long so I guess it's understandable though.

I don't really see the evil in having lent and doing something for it. I have tried many times and last year I succeeded; I gave up coffee because it was starting to be a problem and committed more time for praying. It was good, so I think I should do something again this year as well, though I'm kinda still on the verge because I'm still not sure if it would offend him. Hmm, maybe it were time for a more serious discussion with him again? :p Anyways, what I was thinking of was maybe limiting my time on the computer and dedicating it to prayer as well as giving up sweets and perhaps giving the saved money for the church or something along those lines... I also plan to read a certain NT translation during the lent. We'll see.
