  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am praying about what I need to give up. I have a chocolate habit, so I am thinking I will give up chocolate.....all sweets......

I am going to pray the rosary daily. I am also praying that doing it daily for 40 days will become a daily habit fot the rest of the year!

I'm giving up my boss for Lent.

If that sounds strange, let me explain that he isn't the easiest man in the world to work for....he's not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to management technique, and he has been (IMHO) promoted waaay beyond his capabilities.

As a result, everyone in the department suffers from his bungling and his screwy ideas, and he has twenty extremely unhappy people working for him. As you can imagine, the acrimony that's thrown around the office whenever even just his name is mentioned is shoulder-deep, and viciously savage. If verbal assault were the same as physical assault, the boss would have bled to death long ago.

This is not Christlike behavior, and it's a chronic failing of mine when I'm at work; he absolutely drives me nuts, and my escape valve, too often, is to complain about him, call him names, question his sanity, snarl about his policies, and so on, and my co-workers willingly (and overwhelmingly) join me in these endeavors. This has, I am sorry to say, constituted a major portion of my confessions for the last several months.

So, I'm giving him up for Lent. I'm not going to complain about him, I'm not going to call him names, I'm not going to critique his activities, and I'm not going to call into question his intelligence, his competence, or his ancestry within the human race, all of which I have done repeatedly, loudly, and vociferously before.

This is not going to be easy for me. It's going to be doubly difficult, because my supervisor has transferred me to 1st shift, and I'm going to have to deal with the boss all day, every day, while I'm at work----and I don't like 1st shift anyway; I much prefer 2nd.

I would ask you all to pray for me.

I am planning on keeping the full Orthodox fast as well as abstaining from Pop and attending Pre-Sanctified liturgy on Weds and Fri.

I'm quite ignorant... could you explain more fully what you mean by "full Orthodox fast"? I'm curious. :)

This thread in TAW will explain how we Orthodox keep Great Lent. The quick explanation of the fast is that there is no meat, no dairy, no oil between the first Sunday of Great Lent and Pascha (Easter) and the meals during the day are to be kept to a minimum.

I'm giving up sodas, basically anything that fizzes.

I am, too. I really think I should cut down on the soft drinks. Uh...except for Sundays, of course. :) They're not part of Lent.

What I'd really like to do is give up going to work for the entire season of Lent. But with living costs and all, I don't think I can do that. :D
