Father John W. Fenton said:
The Lenten fast is really not about food. That doesn't mean we can eat what we want, or dispense with the tradition of denying ourselves certain foods. But if you focus on the foodrefraining from meat, or whatever you give upthen you've missed the point. And then you're doing the fast not as a spiritual exercise, but as an empty ritual.
At its core, the Lenten fast is about self-discipline. And self-control. Not to better myself so I can feel good about myself, but to teach and remind myself that lifetrue Christian lifefocuses on heavenly rather than earthly desires.
If we truly treasure the heavenly treasures, then we think little of the stuffthe clothing, the gadgets and toys, the CDs and DVDs, and whatever we accumulate, whatever we feel we can't live without. Even, and especially, food. For our craving ought not be whatever we like, whatever we decide tastes good. Our craving ought to be for whatever Our Lord chooses to give us. Even, and especially, the food of HimselfHis holy Body and His precious Blood in the Eucharist.
