  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I, like DT, resolve to do something more - pray my Rosary every day, and go to Adoration every Tuesday evening at my parish.

However, I'm also going to try to give up junk food - I'm seriously going to try. I love my chocolate a little too much. Luckily it hasn't started to show. LOL.

I plan on doing some spiritual reading, and I really like the rosary idea; I'm not good about that. My SD told me that since I won't be able to participate in the fasting, I'll need to think of something to substitute, and I haven't done that yet. I don't suppose eating more chocolate is a way to fast, huh?

I am not sure yet! I am praying about what to give up. I had thought about giving up tv. It has become way too high on my priority list. its a little scary thinking about giving it up, which is probably why i SHOULD. My aunt, uncle and cousins give up tv for lent every single year ever since i could remember. They turn the tvs off in their house for 40 days every year. I have been wanting to quit smoking for awhile now. I have quit more than once. ONce i quit for over 4 yrs. Then i quit during my pregnancy. I just want to quit for good. Maybe lent would be a good time to do it! I am gonna pray some more.

I will participate in the historic church fast. 1.5 meals per day, no meat (except fish). I am so looking forward to this time for prayer and reflection.

To quote a fellow CFer, Qoheleth's pastor:

Father John W. Fenton said:
The Lenten fast is really not about food. That doesn't mean we can eat what we want, or dispense with the tradition of denying ourselves certain foods. But if you focus on the food—refraining from meat, or whatever you give up—then you've missed the point. And then you're doing the fast not as a spiritual exercise, but as an empty ritual.

At its core, the Lenten fast is about self-discipline. And self-control. Not to better myself so I can feel good about myself, but to teach and remind myself that life—true Christian life—focuses on heavenly rather than earthly desires.

If we truly treasure the heavenly treasures, then we think little of the stuff—the clothing, the gadgets and toys, the CDs and DVDs, and whatever we accumulate, whatever we feel we can't live without. Even, and especially, food. For our craving ought not be whatever we like, whatever we decide tastes good. Our craving ought to be for whatever Our Lord chooses to give us. Even, and especially, the food of Himself—His holy Body and His precious Blood in the Eucharist.

Peace

Rose

My SD has given me the all clear to give up TV to have more silence- although he is letting me have a week and a half of the radio in the evenings. (I turn on the TV when my husband is at work at night- often just for the noise.)

One year I gave up listening to the radio in the car...
