Um how? How are they "theologically bankrupt"? (Please don't take this as a "Aha! I'm right you're wrong so explain yourself!" sort of thing. I like knowledge. I want to know.)

They oversimplify the book of revelation and take literally things which are meant to be metaphorical.

But how do you KNOW they were meant to be metaphorical? No one knows. It's not like it has a legend next to it saying "Those highlighted in ____ are to be taken literally and those highlighted in ___ are metaphors". No one knows. They could be right or wrong. We won't know till we get there.

You have a good point. I won't even go into Rapture theory because I could care less. I'm focused on how I'm living my life RIGHT NOW, not on if there's a chance the Rapture might take place 1 year or 1,000 years from now. That's what I don't get about all these "End times" preachers. Why worry about something you have no control over?

Left Behind = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Support Christian authors that are not chasing the almighty buck...like Frank Perretti.

Well that's a little cynical to follow that kind of logic. Sure, many prominent Christians might be out to make big bucks, but just because the books were popular, you can't criticize the authors. For all they knew they could've bombed. No one ever could have guessed they would hit that big with the non-Christian demographic. Maybe they're using all of that newfound dough to finance missions and the such.

Though I did read an semi-offputting article in Time about the political influence of Tim LaHaye.

There was no reason for them to have the number of books they had in the series. They could have made 4, 600 page books, with smaller print just was easily. They could have taken the time to develop the characters and story with skill instead of turning the books into a mess of both soon after the third book.

The first book was well written and enjoyable. Alot happened in it. After that, it all started going downhill.

Well, with that I do agree. They are painfully stretched out stories, and I starting losing interest in them far before I gave up after the 8th book.

Maybe some people would tell me that I'm just falling for a "money making scheme," or something of the like, but I wouldn't agree - I like the books the way they are. I don't think that they're overly stretched out. I would rather read more books in a series I like than read the same series condensed into fewer books. And really, no one has to buy the whole series to read them. They're so popular that they're in most libraries.

I'm reading Nicolae right now! I bought the box set with the first 4 books about two weeks ago. I'm really enjoying the series so far. Once in a while I think certain details are repeated far tooooooo many times. But, I'm reading them bam bam bam one after the next. If I were waiting a year between books, then the repeated info would probably be quite helpful. :) Oh, I think the character development could be better, not that it's terrible. It could just be better. :)
