Charlie
Her body shifted in her sleep...
“Mom,” Charlie called as she walked onto the back porch. “want to catch fireflies with me?” she held up a jar and it’s lid, walking up to her mother, who was sitting in a wicker chair across from her dad on the porch.
“You better let them go this time, remember you killed them last time.” Drew said from the stairs, where he was fixing his guitar strings.
“Oh leave her alone.” Their father chuckled. “You did the same thing at her age.”
“Did not.” Drew snickered.
“Can I help?” Adam called from the grass, he put the kittens back down on the ground, running up to them.
“Sure.” Their mother smiled, handing him a jar.
The next thing Charlie knew she was in the back seat of her parent’s sedan. She was ready for her dance recital, Adam sitting next to her.
“Dad, why didn’t Drew have to come?” Adam asked, playing with his seat belt.
“Because he has a lot of homework to do.” Their dad answered.
The rain beat down on the car, making it difficult to see out the windows. Lightning lit up the sky, then thunder shook the car.
“Watch out!” her mom yelled. Charlie felt the car sharply turn left, before she knew it the car was rolling.
“MOM!” she screamed, then everything went blank.
When she woke up, the rain was still beating down, the car was the right way, but there was no noise coming from inside it. “Mom…” she called into the silence. “Dad?” she looked over to where Adam had been sitting, all she could see was his little foot, the rest of him was trapped under the passenger seat.
“Honey it’s ok,” a man in a EMT uniform pried the door open. “Everything will be ok.”
“How many people were in the car with you?” another man asked, she stared up at them, scared.
“Just my mom, dad and brother.” She managed.
“We found the mother!” someone in the distance called.
“Honey, they are all dead.” The first EMT said. Tears streamed from her eyes. And she started screaming. Another worker carried her to an ambulance, as she looked back at the car, she wondered how she had survived, her side of the car was completely smashed in.
She sat up, screaming.
