I was feeling really down yesterday (well, I've been really down lately) and a Led Zeppelin lyric really stood out to me. It's the opening lines to "In the Light":

And if you feel that you can't go on. And your will's sinkin' low
Just believe and you can't go wrong.
In the light you will find the road. You will find the road

I really love being surprised by the lyrics of bands that I wouldn't expect to deliver such inspirational methods. People tried to argue that Stairway to Heaven played backwards was actually a song to the devil. Those people are so wrong! Robert Plant, who wrote the song, said he was extremely troubled by that when he heard that. He said: "
To me it's very sad, because 'Stairway to Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music." It's a beautiful song.

And just now I am listening to "In My Time of Dying." I never realized how spiritual the lyrics are:

"In My Time Of Dying"

In my time of dying, want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home

Well, well, well, so I can die easy
[X2]

Jesus, gonna make up my dyin' bed.
Meet me, Jesus, meet me. Meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord. Please meet me with another pair

Well, well, well, so I can die easy
[X2]

Jesus, gonna make up.. somebody, somebody...
Jesus gonna make up... Jesus gonna make you my dyin' bed

Oh, Saint Peter, at the gates of heaven... Won't you let me in
I never did no harm. I never did no wrong

Oh, Gabriel, let me blow your horn. Let me blow your horn
Oh, I never did, did no harm.

I've only been this young once. I never thought I'd do anybody no wrong
No, not once.

Oh, I did somebody some good. Somebody some good...
Oh, did somebody some good. I must have did somebody some good...

And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know it's got to be real
Oh, Lord, deliver me
All the wrong I've done
You can deliver me, Lord
I only wanted to have some fun.

Hear the angels marchin', hear the' marchin', hear them marchin',
hear them marchin', the' marchin'

Oh my Jesus...
[repeat]

Oh, don't you make it my dyin', dyin', dyin'...

I've been listening to them for awhile, but the non-religious person overlooks stuff like that. People assume the worst of 60s/70s rock and roll (what with the whole sex, drugs, and rock and roll), and afterall, Mic Jagger had a tattoo of the devil on him for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. But now I have a reason to love Led Zeppelin even more!

I can't post images or links, but google image search "Robert Plant Dove"

(After performing "Stairway to Heaven," the band released caged doves. They all flew away, but one circled back to the stage and landed right in Robert Plant's hand).

I'm not a big rock music fan, but that would have been cool to see. :)

And to make sure all bases are covered, here is a link to the posted lyrics online, so there won't be any copyright problems. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric....Led-Zeppelin/BC66CC01854766154825688700048FEF

i have always looked for redeeming qualities in art and led zeppelin has been one of the most interesting bands i have listened to. obviously they had some serious preoccupations with alistair crowley, and they certainly lived the rock n roll lifestyle.

however, along with the above lyrics which i have also noticed (however, 'in my time of dying' is an old negro spiritual and points more towards page and plant's interest in the blue rather than any statement of faith), i have always thought that the symbols on album four had some christian symbolism. the three circles (don't think i can post pictures, as my post count is too low) and bonham's is a sort of triquetra--similar to the P.O.D. symbol.

while i have no comment on page's zoso symbol, i do think that plant's symbol is representative of a feather in the wind, cf. lyrics in 'all of my love' (one of their best and most underrated):

Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light
To chase a feather in the wind
Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight
There moves a thread that has no end.

and

Yours is the cloth, mine is the hand that sews time
His is the force that lies within
Ours is the fire, all the warmth we can find
He is a feather in the wind

don't want to read too much into those lyrics as some say it was a song to his dead son.

however page and plant released an album that was not well received (though i thought it was brill) walking into clarksdale with the song 'most high' the lyrics are interesting, to say the least:

Who guards the truth
Oh lord most high
A frightened dove in a starless sky, oh-oh, oh oh oh
So high, most high, so high

Who hides the east from the blind man's eye
In the land of peace
Where the righteous cry, oh-oh, oh oh oh
So high, most high, so high

Where are the words? I'm the king
Who moves the stars and then the sun
To the light where my spirit was born
Bring this wanderer home

While mercy sleeps in the hearts of liars
And the olive tree is consumed by fire, oh-oh, oh oh oh
So high, most high, so high

Where are the words? I'm the king
Who moves the stars and then the sun
To the light where my spirit was born
Bring this wanderer home, come on, come on, come on

When David's seed talks
Through his paper crown
And he spits hot steel
See all the kids fall down
Ohhh yeah, mmm
So high, most high, so high, Oh oh yeah

Oh oh

Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on

Better hurry, hurry
Better hurry, hurry
Better hurry, hurry

Most high, most high high high
Most high, so high, so high
So high

Plant's lyrics are notoriously opaque, but there are some interesting nuggets in there. i am willing to hear any goers on translating those lyrics, but obviously about jesus.

plant has also released and album with alison krauss, who may or may not be a christian.

Led Zeppeilin = the greates band of all time. yes, even better than the beatles.

i love them and i heard about the satanism theory so i did some research. absolutley NOTHING even suggests they we're involved with anything like that. yeah page bought some house by some dude but it was for commercial reasons plus he quote "really liked the design". it's stupid too assume a band is sataic because you don't like them.

also HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THEM?

It's too bad the the fourth album has been so overplayed on "classic rock" radio - especially Stairway. I still enjoy III, Houses, Physical Graffiti and Presence on a regular basis. And the (unedited) versions of "The Rain Song" and "No Quarter" on Song Remains the Same still give me goosebumps. Every time. For my money, the finest hard rock band ever.

Led Zep is such a great classic band. I'd like to see them do a reunion.

Always liked Led Zeppelin ! Was fortunate to see Page & Plant on the 'Unplugged No Quarter Tour' in 1995, not much unplugged did all the classics with a full orchestra, mind blowing mucisianship:thumbsup:
Enjoy!

I love finding lyrics like that out of the blue in secular music! And the really cool this is, I usually end up finding that at least one of the band members turned to Christ with some research, usually the singer. I believe Robert Plant has some Christian beliefs, and was raised in a Christian home.

I find it interesting that on his last two albums, Robert Plant has worked with Christians - T. Bone Burnett produced "Raising Sand" and Buddy Miller produced "Band of Joy". While these choices were most likely made for musical reasons (both are top notch producers), it still makes me wonder if there's not more to Mr. Plant's spiritual side than meets the eye.
