Leaving for College!

I'm leaving on Thursday for college. I'm going to be a freshman, and I'm having so many emotions. I'm excited, yet a little nervous. I don't really know what to expect. I've visited the campus a couple times, but that doesn't tell me what it will be like exactly. I'm not that far from home, about 6 hours driving, but it still seems like a long way aways. I'm not going to college with a majority of my friends (infact I will only know my roommate), and I've never been away from my friends for so long. It's just that 2 of my friends have been so since I was very little. We've been a threesome for the past almost 7 years, now all of a sudden we're being split up. It's a little scary.

Anyways, now that I've practically given you my life story, what this is all about is do any of you have any advice? Did you/are you experiencing any of the same things?

If you haven't read "Case for Christ", read it. People will challenge your faith, and this book is very helpful when you meet the challenge.

Find a student organization or at most two where you share some common interests with people, I recommend a campus ministry as one of them. Pick the right friends.

Set aside days/blocks of time where you will study.

Sometimes, you may have the time to visit your friends or they can visit you. I remember a time when a few friends and I visited a friend of ours who had transferred - it was great all around.

I started reading Case for Christ awhile ago, but then I quit, I need to start up again.

Twisted Sketch has stated some really good advice. Best of luck to you and God bless. Hurry up and join some activities like the campus ministry (if you feel its safe) your first week, try not to be out and about meeting people-exploring the campus as much as possible during your first week.

You have received lots of good advice so far. I'd like to say that finding a campus ministry was what eased my adjustment. I recommend either a small ministry or a small group within a large ministry, as it is important to find deeper fellowship with other Christians.

Also get to know others in your dorm, classes (study groups), etc. You will encounter a lot of people who are different from you. Try to make connections with people who are respectful of your beliefs and your values, and perhaps you will be an influence on them.

And try, try, try not to procrastinate.

I can't really say lucky, because I'm looking forward to college. However, you aren't looking at having to say goodbye to all of your friends, but I'm looking forward to saying hello to a bunch of new ones. There are good and bad things.

Be friendly and meet everyone you can. Avoid 'clicks' and just be super outgoing. W/all freshman, your life is a clean slate. Everyone is looking for friends.

Hey guys and gals. I'm actually a freshman this year as well. I've been in school since Aug. 27 though! I go to a Christian college in MI and I love it! The college itself is associated with the Reformed church, but the general Christian atmosphere is wonderful. Whether or not you go to a Christian college, be sure to get involved with things - esp. in the ministry area. Keep on keepin' on! Elissa

I have already found a bible study group that meets weekly. College isn't as bad as I thought it would have been. There are a lot of people from different backgrounds and locations so making friends will be the easiest thing to do esp. when you get involved.

So I've heard, and that's why my roommate and I have decided that we are going to work out at least 3 times a week.

That's great to hear. I'm hopeing to find a Bible study that I can go to. I would love it if it was the same denomination as mine, but my denom isn't very popular so we'll see what happens. Good luck with your first year!

Nothing is really as bad as we make it out to be. Have fun on your first day. Remember they are just as nervous as you are. You can all embrace your nervousness together.

Just some tidbits of advice from an old "veteran". First, watch out for Ramen noodles, don't eat a lot of them, I took the "Freshman 15" to a whole new meaning, or wait, was that the freshman 30, yeah, that's me. Before anything else get quiet times set-up. This is the most important habit that you can make during your first weeks at school. Meet as many people as you can, you never know how you can impact someone's life. Always smile, it is so disheartening to be walking around a campus and to see noone smiling, we've got the joy of the Lord, show it. Call your mom (well, I'm a momma's boy, so I have done this pretty much every day for the last 4 years). Lastly, enjoy it, college is awesome, just get your priorities straight and enjoy the ride!
