neither really but if i was forced to, i'd probably pick Grateful Dead.

for laugher sake, when i went to college, i was in the coffee shop i always went to. and there was a hippie around where my friends and i were sitting. and i blurted out loud, "the Grateful Dead are gratefully dead" and that hippie gave me a look that was not of make love not war.

Which band started the kind of music popular now with high-pitched male vocals and the soul polished out of it, started around 1997-8 or so, in full swing by the early 2000's? Good examples include Hoobastank's "the reason" and Maroon 5's "she will be loved".

Same here. What's not to love about big, catchy riffs, good vocals, and slick production? It's a guilty pleasure, but Hysteria is really a brilliant record, if only because of its consistency. Not a bad tune on it.
