You're not going to learn Japanese by reading manga and watching anime. The only sure way for an adult to learn any foreign language is to study with a formal textbook, and preferably under the guidance of a good instructor who doesn't think grammar is a "burden" on students. If you can't afford the instructor, go with the next best thing and get a textbook, and practice with people who know Japanese well.

When learning any foreign language, an adult must study the grammar and practice it "to the point of exhaustion." I've studied German for almost 10 years, and even taught it for a few semesters. But don't take my word for it, try it yourself. You will be happily satisfied when you see the fruits of your labor manifest at progressively better levels of proficiency, soaring past your less-focused peers.
あリがとう and i agree. I picked up some phrases from dramas and music and anime, but studying it is much more rewarding and comprehensive.
I have just started but a friend on CF also told me that you should start with the characters of Japanese and not just the English way of writing it.

My advice is going try and learn Japanese do it right get tutor, take class or get good self study program, any sort of program that teaches you Japanese primarly anime and manga I would have doubts about it being a well designed program and not just relying on gimmick to sell copies.

i have to disagree with learning japanese through manga and anime. I'm currently studying Japanese language in Japan and I can tell you the manga and anime can only help so much that your Japanese grammar and vocabulary is limited.

Simple manga does help in Japanese bunpou for beginners. However in anime, the characters all talk broken japanese and it doesn't really help in improving Japanese Language.

If you want, you can try watching Japanese drama because it shows the reality of Japanese people speaking proper Japanese. Plus if you want to further go into professional Japanese, you can look into news and documentaries.

Speaking of which, I learned some like these:

Ore/Boku/Watashi no namae wa (ex. John Matthews) desu.
If you ever came to Japan and said "Ore-no namae-wa John Matthews des" or "Boku...", you'd either be laughed at for being ignorant or slapped for being so arrogant.

:D Definitely not! Oh my, way too funny!

Umm, actually, Japanese is really simple to learn to recognize. Speaking is a little harder, but not by alot. I started learning by listening to anime, but I didn't get it so I did ALOT of research on the web. I learned the sentence structure and all the sounds, I call them syllables, that comprise the language.

I found a great tip for remembering sentence structure of japanese! Basically, you talk like Yoda. Xp

Onamae Jennifa desu.
(My name is Jennifer.)

Toire wa doko desu ka?
(Where is the bathroom?)

Watashi wa nihongo ga sukoshi hanasemasu.
(I only understand a little japanese.)

Eigo o hanasemasu ka?
(Do you speak english?)

And the like. And I can insult ya too!! (SO not posting that tho!! XD)

Yep! That's also what I have learned so far.

And check this:

Doko ni imasu ka?
(Where do you live?)

And I also learnt this but not from anime but from Tokusatsu:

Fangaia... Sono inochi, Kami ni kaeshinasai
(Fangire.... Give that life back to God please)

I'm not too sure about those last ones... you double checked all of this with a reputable source or three? I'd recommend you do before saying any of that seriously. You may be making yourself look silly and not be aware of it!

Okay, I'll edit them once I get myself a reload of Japanese language.
