On the defense of Trent, it was really a council to 'restate' what the Church was about and a call or awakening to the faithful of the Church who had problems with all the anarchy of the times...and needed to know what was up...so to speak.

It was a needed a council, because of all of the confusion.
Undoubtedly. And many of the doctrines affirmed at Trent were already canonized by the Great (Fourth) Lateran Council during late medieval period.

What greatly saddens me about Trent is that the Lutherans and Reformed were not invited to present and defend their views. The theology of the reformers was greatly mischaracterized by the proceedings of the council, which is one reason why the anathemas of the canons have been described as the 'shotgun approach'- some of the anathemas perfectly describe the conflict, and others completely miss the mark.

I do not know, and almost certain that the Church always held closed councils.

Yes, whats disheartening for me is that it was necessary at all or any Council for that matter. Jesus said these things must come. I find Trent to be a statement to clarify orthodox teachings as all councils have been. I don't see Councils as reactionary but as pastoral and medicinal with the sheparding of souls as their goal.

Peace sister.

I kind of have to say that in Acts, the council was pretty reactionary.;)
But that is my take on the subject.
Not that i am debating....i just thot it was imo.

Yes, the council of Trent was to help the orthodox teachings continue onwards even in the face of so many ppl falling away from the Church at that time.

Yea, I guess its neither here nor there really and just a matter of perspective. I kind of always viewed the concerns of the Judaizers being brought before the apostles but nevertheless they definitly spoke for the good of all.

Peace.
