  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Speaking of sermons, I've been having a great time listening to old sessions of Table Talk Radio on my iPod. One along these lines is the Iron Preacher game.

The Iron Preacher is the main pastor on the show. They bring in a challenger (the last one was Todd Wilkins from Issues, Etc.) Then they are given a Scripture to base their sermon around, and they are given about ten minutes to create a sermon outline on which they will be judged. Meanwhile, a seminary professor talks about that Scripture and about how to prepare an effective sermon.

Then the challenger gives his outline, and the professor critiques it. The Iron Preacher gives his outline, and the professor critiques it. And the professor determines the winner.

It's been fascinating to listen to them work out two very different sermons, both focused solidly on Law and Gospel. Makes me appreciate the work our Pastor does each week to preach.
