  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

HiRISE has given us some nice pictures of spiral Martian lava flows, according to Wired and National Geographic.

Very nice. Any reason they make such pretty spirals?

From the National Geographic article they point out that the spirals are similar to features found in slow moving lavas like Hawaiian flows, but the bigger question is why are the fragmented "plate" like structures seen all over this area often very large.

It's an interesting debate: the big "plates" would require one type of "liquid" (water) which can freeze and form kilometer size plates (as they do in the Arctic here on earth) and the spirals indicate another type of liquid (lava) which can form those features like we see in Hawaii!

So this is a pretty interesting debate ongoing now!

And the spirals are AMAZING! I've never been to Hawaii and have precious little experience with what lava flows look like in detail, but if that's around that's gotta be amazing!

Cool find,OP!

I did not read the article.

The fracture pattern is similar to mudcrack seen on the earth. But the spirals defeat that interpretation. To me, a very fast cooling of dilute (basaltic) magma is a possibility which created the feature. The crack pattern is not special. But the preservation of flowing spirals is amazing. The surface of Mars must be ver very cold when the lava pool was created.

Thanks for the info.

A Google image search for ropy lava hawaii finds lots of cool (well, hot) pictures from down here (like the one below). The difference in gravity compared to Mars seems to give a difference in scale, though.
