No, it's not required; but even an average lay Catholic should be familiar with at least some of it, as he's going to be running into it all the time.

Papal encyclicals are always titled in Latin, although usually there are English translations; conciliar documents likewise. The logos on saints medals are often in Latin. Traditional prayers are often titled in Latin, such as "Ave Maria", "Pater Noster", "De Profundis", etc.

I'd say that you can get along with no knowledge whatever of Latin, but it would broaden your horizons immeasurably if you had a good working knowledge of it. :) I am myself by no means fluent, but I do know more than the average bear.

Chris, It was probably this:

Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis,
Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis,
Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Or maybe it was this:

Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, kyrie eleison

"Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy"

---which, in fact is not Latin but Greek; the only part of the Latin Mass which is in Greek. :)

I love singing Latin in songs and stuff at my church. (Gotta love stuff from Requiems!!) My fellow choir members hate it...but there's just something about it that puts me at ease. And it's so easy to speak, at least for me. It's made me a few times want to take up Latin for fun. :)

My two favorite Latin hymns are "Panis Angelicus" and "Ave Maria". Still remember them. Shall I sing them now? :holy:

You never know when these Latin phrases will come in handy.. ;)

To Annabel:

Your Latin is refreshing.........I hope you have another volume or two.

(what's incredible is that I remember enough HS Latin to recognize the correct sentence structure, and the different noun forms!)

Peace and Declensions!
