Latin?

After reading a different post asking for a Latin translation, I started to wonder;

Are Catholics required to learn a certain amount of Latin, similar to how the Jews must learn hebrew?

Just curious.

No, it's not required; but even an average lay Catholic should be familiar with at least some of it, as he's going to be running into it all the time.

Papal encyclicals are always titled in Latin, although usually there are English translations; conciliar documents likewise. The logos on saints medals are often in Latin. Traditional prayers are often titled in Latin, such as "Ave Maria", "Pater Noster", "De Profundis", etc.

I'd say that you can get along with no knowledge whatever of Latin, but it would broaden your horizons immeasurably if you had a good working knowledge of it. I am myself by no means fluent, but I do know more than the average bear.

There's one part of the mass that has been said in latin several times since I started going to mass again. I want to learn at least that part, but I don't remember exactly which one it is.

---which, in fact is not Latin but Greek; the only part of the Latin Mass which is in Greek.

I love it when I attend Mass and they sing latin hymns (it's such a pleasant surprise).

I love singing Latin in songs and stuff at my church. (Gotta love stuff from Requiems!!) My fellow choir members hate it...but there's just something about it that puts me at ease. And it's so easy to speak, at least for me. It's made me a few times want to take up Latin for fun.

My two favorite Latin hymns are "Panis Angelicus" and "Ave Maria". Still remember them. Shall I sing them now?

(what's incredible is that I remember enough HS Latin to recognize the correct sentence structure, and the different noun forms!)

I wish I could take credit for all that nifty Latin, Vow. But I found it on a Latin Website a few years ago.
My Latin is limited to prayers and what I can remember my mother teaching me. Now SHE was fluent!
