In the headlines, "Lady Gaga in Vanity Fair" above "Siberia plane crash kills 12".

Does she, a media puppet, deserve that spot in the news?

Amazing how one insignificant woman, who adds nothing positive to existence, has so many self disrespecting degenerates wrapped around her finger.

The music industry values a single song as three times more valuable than a human life, what else is new?

Yes, I'm being deliberately cynical and hyperbolic there, but it does originate from another similar headline juxtaposition on Yahoo!, although the music industry wasn't actually the one doing the figures on how much a human life is apparently worth. It was simply unfortunate that the site's coverage of the Air France crash victims' families being compensated ~20K-30K USD was right above or below, after doing some mathematical breakdown, that the RIAA was seeking ~80K USD in damages per song in one of its piracy lawsuits. I even took a screenshot of Yahoo!'s front page when I saw it, but it's buried away in one of my archive discs.

It boils down to public. Most people would rather read about Lady Gaga, so she is what gets the headline. Do I think it's wrong? Why would it be if that is what people want to read about? Do I think it's asinine? Of course. But on the other side, I would rather read positive news than depressing news.

How is she different to any other big artist/film star/sports star? Is there something you don't like about Lady Gaga in particular?

Meh, that's the way the world works.
We're all seemlessly captivated by athletes, celebrities, and pop stars.

I think society's lost track of what's important.

I remember watching a tv program about the difference in values between our modern culture and that of society hundreds of years. And the narrator made a really poignant point regarding the cultural community. The point was how hundreds of years ago, people who wrote plays without necessarily being in the production themselves, were revered and honored. A classic case is William Shakespeare.

Whilst today, society has degenerated to the point where we are obsessed with people who on the whole don't write or create any plays or movies-but merely "act" in it.

What a great point I thought. The reverance we give today to a bunch of actors who do nothing more than memorise a script and act, compared to people who actually create that script.

I second that BlackSabb.

Artists are processed, with regards to music and movies. Most music..including Lady Gaga, is just a guy sitting in front of a computer for 20 mins, throw some superstars vocals in, and it's a number one hit. Anyone can make that music.

True, but she is one of the few pop stars who can belt it out on stage just as well as she does on the albums without using a vocal track to lip sync to.

If anyone can make it why don't you give it a try? Your fortune awaits.

Don't see how you can blame Lady Gaga for wanting to be a successful artist, or succeeding. Nor do I think she ever set out to be more newsworthy than a Siberian plane crash. The responsibility here lies with the newspaper who thinks people will be much more interested in stories and pictures of Lady Gaga, than in a distant if tragic the plane crash, and the public who very probably are.

And wasn't Shakespeare an actor as well as a playwright?

12 people died in a plane crash. Whoop-dee-doo. Don't worry, nobody we care about died on that plane.
12 million people die in a Tsumnami. Tra-gic.
Lady Gaga makes the Headlines. [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth], Somebody do something!!!!1!!!!111! Its the endd of tegh World!

Seriously, IIRC, Lady Gaga actually does deserve her success.

She has gone Bankrupt from all the costumes she buys for her videos.
She is homeless, living in hotels.
She sings live as well as she does on the albums.
She has fainted onstage, but keeps singing anyway.

I don't like her, but damn if she isn't dedicated.

There are these things called T-shirts and jeans. I picked some up at Target the other day for about 10 bucks.

Obviously i'm quite biased. But she is a fantastic singer, (youtube some of her acoustic performances, her voice is much better live than it is on cd) and is extremely interesting to me. I have never liked pop music, ever. However, I adore her music. It's supposed to be cheeky and kitschy and odd. It's a break from a lot of the pretentious, highbrow, indie crap I listen to.

Furthermore, she isn't a record label puppet. I think you will find with some research that she deserves the credit for her popularity and success. She is overwhelmingly present in her production, mixing, stage direction, costume design. All of it.

She is an artist, but like all art it's subjective. Some people will like it, and some won't. I don't like Picasso's work, but I don't dare write him off as a hack just because I don't like his paintings. I hate Micheal Jackson's music, yet I cannot deny he was talented.
