Has anyone noticed the strong similarities between the two current murder investigations for Laci Peterson and Lori Hacking? For one, both cases involve the husband as investigator’s primary suspects. Both Scott Peterson and Mark Hacking also have a history of lying to their spouses…with Scott admitting an affair with another woman (Amber Frey) and Mark having lied about his career and schooling for years.

With so much currently going on with both trials, (such as the judge in the Peterson case putting the trial on hold because of new found evidence, and the investigators in the Hacking murder digging a landfill each day looking for the body of Lori Hacking) I thought to start a discussion group here and see what everyone’s opinions are.

I also wanted to mentioned that Court TV just announced that Nancy Grace (I love this lady) will be keeping us updated on both trials through a live nightly broadcasts next week, at 8pm each night (Monday – Thursday). For those following either or both cases, this helps us stay one day ahead of what get printed in the newspapers. Perhaps we can use the topics she brings up as sources of discussion here as well.

Hi Susie,

Count me in! I am fascinated by both of these stories. I don't know why, but I can't get enough information about them.

I've prayed for both situations/families. It's so sad and just shows the human condition without salvation.

What do you think the potentially exculpatory evidence is in the Scott Peterson trial? I heard something about a tarp that didn't have duct tape, indicating that weights were not used? Something like that.

Looking forward to interesting conversation on here!

They are very similar to each other. What I dont understand what was going on in this guy's mind (Mark Hacking) faking his schooling, I was reading yesterday, that he would walk around the campus outside with a backpack full of books and would even write term papers that did not exhist. :sigh: I dont understand, why people go to some lengths. And I'm willing to bet, his whole head injury from when he fell of a roof in 97 (I think is the right year) is what the defense is going to use in trying to get him off the hook

If yall are really in to this yall should check out www.websleuths.com ... all they do is discuss cases in the news (primarily the Peterson case... I think he's innocent, so I rarely discuss it w/ anyone... all they want to do is convince me I'm wrong) like these two... they also discuss JonBenet Ramsey, Kobe Bryant and some others i've never heard of.

Mods, I hope it is ok to post this... if it's not I'm very sorry and I will happily remove it!

You also forgot one other similarity~ that both women were pregnant. One was due to have her son within a month, and the other was claimed to be 5 weeks along. I really doubt that Lori IS pregnant....because if Mark want to copy Scott's M.O., he would lie about her pregnancy, just for the excuse to kill her.

As for an old head injury, I don't buy that either. If there were a LOT of people with old head injuries, we'd have jails filled to the gills with people who killed because they weren't in their right mind. Sure, their head injuries knock them silly, causing mood/emotional changes, but it rarely gives grounds for murder. Sorry, it just doesn't jibe. And I hope some people judging Mark will have some common sense about this.

I can NEVER fathom anyone killing their families, especially those who are pregnant! If they don't like being married to their spouses, then divorce! Tis far better to do that, than to kill. That really irks my taters...!

I dont see any similarities between Hacking and Peterson, except the most superficial.

With the Hacking case, after a few weeks the prosecutors have determined the murder scene, method, time and a body. They have physical evidence, witnesses, a history of sociopathic behavior, a confession from the husband and a clear motive (Hackings wife upset over his life of leis and that he let them lose their appartment and prepare to move to housing that was purely fictitious led to confrontation, etc). There is a ton of evidence and no doubt he is the murderer.

With Peterson, there is no murder weapon, no determined place, no clear motive (the life insurance was about a year and a half old and he was ending his affair with Frey, despite his lies to her). We have no physical evidence tying Peterson to the death of his wife and son, and he has no prior history of violence or deranged behavior (sorry, being a cad is not deranged, just despicable). There has not been a single credible witness to Scot doing anything suspicious that was not some kind of subjective WAG, such as claims that his tears were fake in one interview, and why didnt he cry in another, etc.

The prosecution and investigation of the Peterson kidnappings and murders will become examples of how to botch a murder investigation for years to come, probably even included in every college textbook on the subject, and the Modesto Police eventually synonymous with the Keystone Cops. There is no evidence or reason to believe that Scot Peterson killed his wife that is based on anything other than subjective conjecture or stereotyping husbands as craven villains who just cant wait for an excuse to kill the women they marry.

I genuinely think Scot Peterson is likely innocent, and I am amazed that people are not aware of all the prosecutorial/investigative miscues that have gone on in the trial so far. The investigators have dismissed out of hand a confession from a known sexoffender to killing a 'Lisa Peterson' on Christmas eve that year that fits Lacis description. They ignored a group of break-in burglarers, a known criminal gang that also sells methamphetamines that was robbing the house across the street the same day Laci disappeared, according to the home owners. They have ignored contrary witness statements and physical evidence; for example two hairs found on tape to Laci's corpse were never compared to any of the other theoretical suspects, and a clear bag from astore chain in Canada found by Connors body was never tested to see if he had been wrapped in it, despite the 'death smell' it emited and the tape on it being of the same kind used on Laci. The only evidence they have is a pair of pliars found in the boat that had Lacis hair, which is insignificant since she used them to hang some pictures just a few weeks before.

While Hacking finally broke down and confessed to the murder of his wife despite being deranged, Scott Peterson is still insisting on his innocence with no personal remorse over a year and a half after the cold blooded murder of his pregnant wife and unborn first son.

There is a huge amount of difference here between the two cases.

Scot Peterson methinks is innocent and likely to get his case dismissed very soon.

Lori Hacking later went to bed, and Mark Hacking stayed up to play Nintendo. As he continued packing for the couple's planned move to the medical school at North Carolina, he came across a .22-caliber rifle, walked into the couple's bedroom and shot his wife, according to the probable-cause statement.

He then wrapped her body in garbage bags and put the body in a trash bin at the University of Utah in the pre-dawn hours. He disposed of the gun in another bin and after cutting off the pillow top of the mattress, he put the mattress in a third bin.

That's sad.... He killed her b/c of his own issues... You have to be careful who you get involved with nowadays... forreal.

Yes, it is better to judge a prospective mate by their values, character and congeniality than any other aspect of who they are, espacially more than mere appearance.

Yet, I know people will ignore these things, in general, and continue to evaluate their prospective spouses purely on appearance forever.

In some respects, humanity is as dumb as a sack of rocks.

Hi

I like trials, too. And Nancy Grace :)

I see a difference between the two men, though. Peterson seems mainly
just kind of cold or something. Hacking seems extremely mentally ill. I'm
not saying if he's guilty he shouldn't be held accountable. I just don't see
a lot of similarities between the two husbands.

I also have to say if I were on the Peterson jury, with the evidence that has
been entered into the record, I'd have to vote not guilty. It's just not been
proven to me.
