I just got my first degree tonight!

It was a pretty well done ritual, and I had the pleasure of going through it with the Deacon who baptized my youngest daughter about 6 months ago (that really suprised me to see him there)

Most of you know I am an "ex-freemason turned Catholic", and I must say the degree work in the Knights is *very* similar - but Catholic .

Anyway, I got a really bad taste in my mouth for fraternities after leaving masonry and swore I would not join another one, but after tons of requests from the grand knight of my parish council, I decided I could do it again, but only if they drank lots of beer and were less serious, and it appears the the KofC and I are gonna work out fine.

You likely have a sign at your parish, but if not you can inquire here and they will have someone contact you.

Ask your preist he will be able to induce you to some one in your local councial.

Requiments for memberships: Confirmed Catholic over the age of 18 in full union with the Holy See.


If you have ever seen the guys in tuxes with feathery hats and swords at mass those are members of the Knights

hmm good question I don't know if confirmation is required per the letter of the constution. The knights realy aren't that pickey. But I think it is safe to say in most cases a catholic male over the age of 18 in union with the Holy See and who practices the precepts of the Church will be confirmed.

Back when the Knights started, a lot of Catholic men were being drawn into freemasonry, in part because of the allure of "the unknown". Fr. McGivney wanted to combat losing men to the heresy and danger that is freemasonry, so they started the "degrees". While we say that what goes on in there is "secret", it's really not. We only keep it a secret because of the valuable lessons that are taught (especially as it pertains to personal, spiritual insight) within the degrees (wait until you go through your second and third degrees).

Anyways, congratulations and I'm glad to have you as a Brother Knight.

I had read something similar to that once, but figured it was speculation. Thanks for confirming that it is accurate information.
I plan on knocking out the second and third degrees as soon as possible, but the dates are not set yet as to when the degree work will happen.

I plan on knocking out the second and third degrees as soon as possible, but the dates are not set yet as to when the degree work will happen.

The second and third degrees are usually done at the same time. You'll be a Second Degree Knight for all of about two hours. Going through the degree is a great learning experience, and you'll make some good friends there, even though the whole process only takes a few hours. What is even better though then, is going to the next degree ceremony and seeing it from the other aspect. Everytime I've gone, it's been a learning experience.

Okay, funny story. This is when both my brother/sis-in-law and I lived in Texas. My brother and s-i-law drove out to see us. They announced that they had seen a Klan office on the way, right on the main road, it was the Knights of Columbus, lol.

CONGRATULATIONS It's men like you with a strong desire to support the Church that are needed in the Knights. I remember my First Degree quite well, although it's over 50 years ago. Last year they sent a Life Honorary Membership card; where have the years gone? When I joined, we became the only three generation family in our council.

It's my understanding that if what goes on is not kept secret, it would greatly diminish the value of the lesssons taught, and the effectiveness in teaching them . .


Please pray for my husband . .he has expressed interest in becoming a knight, and I would wholeheartedly support it . . but he is having real 2nd thoughts on the whole "Catholic" thing . . so he appears to be going the opposite direction right now . ..
