  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Knitters Meet!

Is anyone else here a knitter? I've been knitting for about 6 years now, but still consider myself a beginner. I guess I've never taken the time to do something complicated and REALLY challenge myself because I hate the thought of pouring myself into something and screwing it up! So I just use pretty yarn and do fairly basic patterns.

So, does anyone else knit? How long have you been at it?

Hiya. I knit. There's another thread in here somewhere where people talked about their knitting. I've only been knitting since last year. It's really fun though. I just got a simple non-electronic knitting machine called "the ultimate sweater machine". So i'm learning a little machine knitting too. But hand knitting is the most relaxing and interesting. I also stick with basic patterns. There are a lot of knitters who prefer to knit simple things so that they can relax and watch t.v. while knitting. You can listen to sermons on the radio/internet too. I love "mindless knitting"!

So far, I make beanie style hats, different kinds of scarves, head-scarfs, and I tried to make a simple bag (but chickened out on sewing it up). I want to try a sweater soon. I also want to use the ultimate sweater machine to knit a huge blanket to cover my queen sized bed. (FYI: If you get a Jo-Ann's coupon or Michael's coupon for 50% off, the ultimate sweater machine is way cheaper...around 80 bucks. Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a commercial. lol)

LOL :) I like Jo-Ann's and use their coupons a lot.

Have you ever tried felting? Your bag idea made me think of it. It's super easy to just knit a bag in wool yarn and then you wash it a couple of times in hot water (in your washer). It shrinks up into a really cool, solid feeling bag. You can do this with slippers too.

I knit, or should I say I have knit and still know how, but haven't picked up the needles for years now.
I learned from my mother when I was in junior high school. I saw a sweater pattern that I knew my sister would love, so I asked my mother to teach me how to knit it. This was February, 1976, and I distinctly remember learning to knit while watching Franz Klamer of Austria win the downhill in the Innsbrook Winter Olympics.
I've knit all manner of objects, from hats and scarves to sweaters for myself and my wife, from brown and orange "finger beanies" when the Cleveland Browns were going to the playoffs every year and losing to the Denver Broncos to a layette set (sweater, hat, pants, and booties) for my twin brother's baby boy. He's 14 now, and my kids are 13, 11, eight, and four, but I've never knit anything for them.
I like designing my own sweaters now. I knit my wife a number of sweater vests she wore a lot while she was still working outside of the home; the women she worked with would not believe they didn't come from a fancy department store until she showed them the hand-embroidered label "Sew Domestic/ Made with 100% love." That's her special designer label because when she found out I knit and cook and embroider, she told me "You're so domestic."
I enjoy looking at knit patterns and figuring out how to make them. I can't really say I've seen anything I wouldn't try because my mother ingrained in me the idea that you can make any pattern using only a handful of simple techniques.
I really have to dig out my needles again.

If you can crochet, you can knit! :)
I love to knit, it's so relaxing. I have made some sweaters, a blanket, a scarf. I really like to knit when we're on vacation, driving for miles and miles.

Since I am a newbie I cannot post any pics yet but when I am allowed to maybe I can scan some directions with simple how-to-do, step-by-step photos.

I have been knitting for a long time now and have quite a few patterns both in English and French. I even own a nice juki knitting machine but haven't touched it in years. No time for hobbies anymore. :sigh:

There are some instructional pictures and video over here. They even have some practice patterns for you to try them out on.

I love to knit. I'm currently working on an afghan for my daughter, of my own pattern, mostly ribbing and cables. I hope I can finish it by Christmas! In fact, I should get off the computer and go work on it RIGHT NOW!!!

I tried knitting an afghan once, but I had the tension all wrong and I ended up with a Pakastani.

:D

Purls were a really hard thing to learn for me too. Looking at pictures is the only way to get it I think. A purl stitch is a backward knit stitch. Just keep trying. It's like learning to ride a bike, eventually you'll get it.:)
