  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a kitten that's about 9 or 10 weeks old now. She was a stray but obviously at one point was owned because she sort of knew what to do with kitty litter. Yes I tried to find the owner, she was starving, probably a Christmas present nobody wanted.

Anyway.

She uses her kitty litter like a good little kitten.

However, sometimes she'll do a poop just next to it. She knows it's bad because whenever I come into the garage and see it, I call out to her and she runs away, or she'll hide and watch me, then run away. If I pick up the poo and put it in her litter, she'll come over and scratch the litter over it - so she knows what to do.

Is she doing this for attention? When I spend a lot of time with her, there's no problem. It's when she's in trouble or at night time when she's put in the garage that she randomly does one, every couple of days or so.

Any advice?

First - good on you for adopting the stray! I hope you got it checked out by a vet to make sure it doesn't have feline AIDS or feline leukemia before exposing it to any other cats you may have.

I don't know the answer to your particular cat's problem but I can say it's not uncommon. My father had a cat that did something similar, and she'd do it whenever she was scared by the other cats in the house. Which was pretty often because the other cats were not particularly nice to her. He didn't solve the problem, but once the cat was placed in another home where it was the only cat (and spoiled rotten), the problem stopped. My old one would sometimes fling his droppings out of the box when trying to cover it.

My current cat will frequently pee out of the box which is both annoying and messy. The vet suggested getting a larger litter box, one w/larger sides, to stop it. It doesn't sound like that is the problem w/your little one. I also noticed that she won't do that when the box is changed really frequently (like every other day).

I'd suggest that you keep putting the droppings back in her box so that behavior is reinforced. Be patient and the problem might go away. Good luck to you w/this problem.

Hey thanks for your post. She is the only cat I have, so that's not a problem. I'll keep putting the droppings in the litter. I've started watching her for a bit after her dinner so I can 'catch her' before she poos and I can put her in her litter.

Here's hoping.

I'll keep this thread updated.

GRR!

I followed her around the nearly 40 minutes waiting for her to poop so I could pick her up and put her in the kitty litter.

I gave up and went to watch TV.

Five minutes later, I come into the garage to see that she has pooped, in the same place as before, next to her kitty litter. It's a yucky smelly poo.

ARGH!

Could it be because it's a gross poo, she doesn't want to do it in her kitty litter? The litter is clean - I cleaned it out only yesterday and there is no hard stuff in there at all.

It's so frustrating, but I guess at least she hasn't pooped on the carpet, or tore up a chair or something. But still...

When she saw me come in and I saw the poo, she ran, so she knows it's wrong. What do I doooo??

Usually when a cat leaves feces right outside of the box, unlike urine it simply indicates a preference that's not being met, or simply a fancy for the floor (but watch that you don't let a habit form!).

If she's not happy with the box (which is usually the case), it could be too small, not deep enough, or filled with uncomfortable litter. Cats prefer soft surfaces and are extremely clean, so fine, scoopable litter is consistently their preference. You should always have one extra box compared to number of cats (i.e., one cat, two boxes; two cats, three boxes; etc.) and should give a good scoop twice a day, though I prefer scooping three or four times as some cats are just picky.

If you've already covered that, she may just prefer the floor. In that case, do what you can to make the area around the box unpleasant, and make sure you clean with something enzymatic.

Thankyou for your help. I have two kitty litter boxes for her - one that's big and one that's a little smaller. She chooses to poop next to the one that is smaller. We have cardboard boxes flattened out around the kitty litter in the hope that she poops on them, but she'll poop just off the cardboard, onto the cement. I've sprayed the cardboard with unpleasant stuff, but she poops on the cement.

Perhaps I should change the kitty litter.

I guess at least my kitten isn't pooping on the carpet!

I'll try that, thanks. We've been cleaning it with some spray'n'wipe thing. It's just getting tiresome and I know it will probably get worse when I have to go back to uni, so I won't be home all day.
