Neeners, I'm not in San Francisco anymore (happily married in Texas). I went to the University of San Francisco for graduate school, and lived in the city. I wore beads to work for Mardi Gras, and people thought I was crazy. Then, I had to explain what this strange cake was that I brought to my class that night. But, I figure it was a good witness to how the church celebrates the liturgical year. One day I brought in a big yummy cake and bead, and the next night I had ashes on my head and was fasting
The Walk for Life West Coast is such an amazing experience. You should definitely go if you have the chance. The focus is on the idea that Women Deserve Better than Abortion, and the usually have great speakers.
I really loved San Francisco, and I found a great Catholic community there.

Oh my bad, when you said you thought SF should be up on Mardi Gras i thought you meant because of the gays there.
And i finally found a King Cake.

What happens? How far do you walk and how long is the whole thing? I haven't gone yet.
That's what I jokingly meant. The culture there definitely leaned towards endulgence, and yet they didn't know about Mardi Gras. I would think they would be all over it. Though we should be glad they aren't
It's big in St. Louis too. I also believe we have the biggest Mardi Gras celebration next to New Orleans (in the US that is). I was amazed when I lived in other cities that most people had never heard of it, or had not celebrated Mardi Gras. I love King Cake. I think I might try to make my own King Cake for Fat Tuesday this year (still too sick to try scratch baking right now).
I can't remember the exact about, but it's a really nice walk from downtown to a little past fisherman's wharf. There is a rally before the walk (and a mass before the rally if you want to go), and then they walk down, and at the end there are pro-life groups giving out info. I think democrats for life is there so you will definitely want to stop by
