  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Killing Insects?

If there's a spider or something on my wall, the first course of action I take is the ol' glass and newspaper trick. Put the glass over said spider, newspaper under the glass, and toss it outside. I pulled a hobo spider (think: brown recluse) off my wall once in this fashion when it would have probably been more proper to blow it to smithereens with my shotgun. I only kill insects if they're about to bite or sting me. If they're not, I just remove 'em.

Jainism is a vedic religion centered around not harming ANY living thing, whether it's insects, any other animal, or even plants. They never walk with shoes on grass or do anything that might even uproot grass or plants. They usually live by eating what's already died, a lot of times the more hardcore ones will not be able to find anything to eat and die.

It's a little extreme, but it's the only kind of 'nonviolence for animals' that I can comprehend. The PETA, for example, only really cares about cute fuzzy animals, you'd be hard pressed to find a PETA member willing to defend bugs from being stepped on. Unless you're a jainist (or at least someone who doesn't harm any kind of animal, you probably don't have to go as far as not killing plants) I don't really pay attention to you if you ask me not to kill other animals.

I'm always really hesitant to kill insects, and while it could be that I'm actually afraid of them, I was just wondering if anyone considered it wrong to kill insects or spiders...

I usually try to use compassion and scoop them up and throw them outside...but the second one of those suckers jumps off the paper, then they're fair game to my shoe! I can't see them going extinct too soon..:)

I generally don't kill them unless they are sucking my blood. I even felt guilty once killing a bee after it stung me.

Why feel guilty. The bee was gonna die a slow death anyway. You just put it out of it's misery.

I tend to squash em. It's my first reaction. Although, lately I've been using the glass and paper method. It's less messy.

I wouldn't worry too overly much. They don't really have the nervous system capability to be able to suffer in any real sense.

I don't like killing spiders myself because I'm convinced, in a completely irrational manner, that the Big Mamma Spider is going to show up to take revenge some day.

Oh. I'll roast Big Mama spider over the barbecue on a bayonet.

I love bugs, and my formerly crippling fear of spiders has waned over the past few years. I think pink toe tarantulas are cute, even. I mean come on... pink toes! :D

That said, I only kill things like spiders that can bite if stepped on. If beetles or anything get in the house I take them outside, or keep them as pets for a while. I currently have a boxelder bug in a cup, haha.

Now, house centipedes. Those are icky. I still hate to kill them because they eat other bugs, but oh man are they hideous.

I dare anyone who's afraid of spiders to do a google image search for "clockspider".

It's worth mentioning that most smaller spiders will die if you throw them outside. They're called house spiders for a reason.

Myself, I don't particularly like to kill bugs, but I do it if they're the kind that bite and they're inside my house. Or if they're the kind that get into food, etc. Spiders I never kill.
