I'm assuming you have a PC.

For Audio only:

Connect the output or headphone jack of your keyboard to the Line input on your sound card. This will let you hear what you are playing on the keyboard through the PC speakers. Be sure the volume for "line in" is up on your volume control.

for MIDI:
The joystick port on your sound card dubs as a midi jack. you'll have to get a splitter cable that has the joystick plug on one end and the midis on the other. Once you have that connected, in control panel, there is a icon for sounds and audio divices or it may simply say multimedia if you have Win98, if memory serves. Anyhoo, under that window there is a tab that will say Audio divices (WIn 2000/XP) or midi (WIN98/95)

Click on either tab and look to see what is selected for Midi Music Playback. There should be a dropdown menu that will let you select "MIDI output" if your cound card has a joystick port. Once thats done, you should be able to play midi files through your keyboard.

Thats the short of it. This all depends on what version of windows you have and what your sound card is capbible or.

Blessings...

Hey, guys. Software exists that will plot sounds as music notation, but it's pretty sophistocated. A while ago it still didn't work very well even on Finale, but nowadays who knows. At any rate, we know it's there. Still, with MIDI some of the basist programs out there will record what you play on your MIDI instrument, but depending on how sophistocated the software is, our own human error as it applies to the perfection of the software's metronome can produce some funky rhythms. (Easily edited for some programs.) I use Finale and I find that the best way is to enter in the note values with the MIDI keyboard and then type the rhythms in via the number entry pad on the computer's keyboard (On Finale, this is done with the speedy note entry tool...I don't quite know what other programs would call it) It's like typing--slow at first, but it quickly becomes very fast. If you find a great interest in software notation programs, Finale is GREAT, although the learning curve seems to be a little slow at first. It's expensive, though, so if you're not sure about it it's probably not worth the dough.

I've heard people rave about Finale, but my expereince has made it very difficult to use for first time software users. Noteworthy is notation software as its name suggests. There's no need to buy an additional one.

Kev, What you are most interested in is the midi connections I told you about above. That is what allows you to transmit the notes you play on the keyboard tyo the computer so that they appear on the staff. It should be possible to play them directly into the program using a standard one-part treble and bass cleff score. A new file should open up this way. The notes may not be perfectly alligned to because we play and make minute rhythmic mistakes. Thats where a feture like Quantizing comes it; it will align everything according to time signature, tempo, and rhythmic style.

If you have a specific question about the software, I suggest emailing them or visit thier website at:

Please understand that midi is different from audio. It sounds like all you are interested in is inputing notes into the software to make sheet music. When you say "record" do you mean just recording the notes onto a score or actually playing back the music or recording sound into your computer?
