My little sister has been using Kazaa a lot for the past few months. She absolutley refuses to use any other file sharing program. For those of you who don't know, Kazaa is notorious for infesting computers with spyware. They're partnered with the friendly Gator Corp, upon which many net nerds have wished painful torture and death in retaliation for their spyware. ;)

Is there any way to use Kazaa without suffering from the spyware? As it stands now, every time I visit home, I have to spend a half hour in front of the computer, cleaning up garbage, only to have to do it again the next time I visit!

With a program like Kazaa, I don't think you can remove the spyware/adware. Actually its more like your are not allowed to. I think that the spyware/adware is somehow integrated into the program in a way that it has to be there for Kazaa to run. Of course, there are a few spyware/adware you could remove by simply using ad-aware or other spyware/adware software. Other than that, I think you should just try another software. Also, I don't think you will be able to find a free version of Kazaa-lite anymore, since Kazaa has destroyed the free version of it, you can still get it, but at a price.

Oh! Oh! I've a got a good solution for you. Stop using KaZaA. Most of the shared files are illegal anyway.

agreed. also to add to that the fact that some files have viruses in them. be vary careful if you use kazaa, make sure you have anti-virus protection (a good one like norton, or some of the other good ones out there) and make sure you update the virus definitions atleast once a week. also if your anti-virus software doesnt have auto-scan (it scans files when they are downloaded) then make sure you scan the files you download before you open them..

but the simple solution is dont use it.. ;)

doesnt have any problem with kazaalite ... but if a popup occurs and using IE, do the following: you dont need an additional ad/popblocker software to do this..

here's what i do:

point mouse to the ads/popup window, right click... properties... copy root url of the popup/ads...

click IE browser's tools.. internet options -- security -- restricted sites -- sites -- paste/type root url of the add/pop then, click add --- ok ok

then go to privacy -- edit-- paste/type root url of the add/pop then, click block-- ok ok ...

there you are the popup or advertisement will not come out anymore

just repeat the process everytime a popup/ads appears in your pc! .. and i tell you, it worked for me very effectively, so surely, will work with you as well ...

When I used to use Kazaa, I downloaded it, used it, uninstalled it and then cleaned up--it's the only way to handle kazaa if you value your privacy. Kazaa runs Cydoor into your system when you install it--this is why kazaa is free to use--producers now know what you see online, what you download, and 80% of your interests.

By now I've altered Kazaa's Cydoor spyware to where it shows a looped listing of sites (weird sites--modern art galleries, christian fundamentalist pages, and other things that will not bring unwanted spam to your door) so that the owner of the spyware always sees the same thing and cannot sell your IP address to spammers/ or spam you himself. (Thanks to methodus toolz)

Kazaa Lite is still around and kicking, it's just not getting developed as such or by the same team anymore because Sharman Networks shut them down. There are some websites that offer archival versions of it however, but those are relatively hard to find and usually aren't heavily-trafficked. You could probably even do a search on Kazaa itself and find it, if need be.

And yes, certain programs will cease to work if you remove all the spyware/adware packaged with it. DivX Pro Ad-supported is like this. However, there are certain "tricks" using Ad-aware and Spybot to remove only the malicious parts of the spyware/adware and leave the computer thinking it's still on there when it's really not. It involves leaving practically only the registry entries, nothing else. The registry entries aren't going to harm you or send you junk, it's like a marker that fools the computer (and the program in question) into thinking the software is still there, so it'll still work without the ad-serving. Doing a search for that sort of thing on Google or AOL Search will probably give you some websites with more in-depth info.

I wish that was an option. My sister refuses to stop using it, and the only way I can keep my parents computer from flooding with garbage is to maintain it.

I managed to DL Kazaa Lite K++, and it's working well for her. Hasn't been much spyware lately, and the stuff I do find probably isn't from Kazaa. I've been cleaning it up with Spybot- Search and Destroy. It finds stuff Ad-Aware didn't even know existed. Good stuff.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

There's no chance it's from Kazaa if you installed K-Lite. Unless, of course, it was left over from the Original Kazaa installation.

And the reason Spybot finds more stuff than Ad-aware is because Ad-aware targets only programs marked as adware. Spybot takes care of that stuff too, but it's more geared for things marked as spyware. The difference between the two can be wide or very narrow, but if you use Ad-aware first and get rid of the stuff it detects, and then follow it up with Spybot to purge the rest, you should be sailing on clear waters. Just remember to also have a firewall put up just in case, since that can also prevent stuff from getting through or block it from contacting its host if it does manage to get in.
