From 1999 to 2010 I used Windows. Averaged one OS crash per year. In 2011, I switched to Ubuntu Linux, never had or needed virus protection, and have not had a crash since 2011. BUT....my new computer, which I need for my job (my employer thinks Windows is the only platform worthy of note) has Windows 10. So I installed Ubuntu as a second OS. Everytime (about once a week) I must use Windows 10, the OS overwrites my bios settings, and to get my REAL OS back, I have to F12 start, F9 restore defaults, and F10 save, Otherwise, the Ubuntu installation is not available on my computer.

I've been on a ubuntu derivative for a year now, and it has been really good. It's clean, simple, classic and fast, and has most of the polished features of Windows. Linux is made by people who like freedom and privacy as much as we do, and I feel far more comfortable with it than with any MS product.

As I have repeatedly said, MS is not a charity and has a market plan it is pursuing with Win10. There will be a cost to the OS, however hidden it may be at first.

I'm now a lead tech at a large store, and I see machines every day that won't boot because of MS's mandatory updates. The machines come in like clockwork after every month's "patch Tuesday".

It started back in Windows 8. It deleted my program files folder without warning :(

It wasn't a defect or bug in the OS, it's actually a Window 8 featureo_O

A lot of people complained about it but Microsoft did not do anything about it. There's absolutely no purpose of that feature, unless Microsoft wanted you to buy new apps that isn't always Microsoft's.

MS has been in trouble before - mostly with the EU on anti-trust issues. But sometimes here in the US as well.

This one sounds like another one.

Have you turned off "fast startup" at win10's Control Panel / Power options?

Yes, and thanks. I spent a week researching it. Could not find anything that I could understand that worked. The F12-F9-F10 system I have is really the best, since at least it works all the time.

Kind of weird. Maybe they want all software to be distributed though their software store. Perhaps this is a good thing. Would be easier to find software, and less chance of malicious program infections. Third-party MS software could also be kept updated with less effort.

Having to go on a wild goose chase, all over the Internet for software. Is kind of a dumb idea these days. My opinion.

This doesn't affect me yet though, since I use Linux at this time.

I refuse to let Microsoft decide which software I run on MY computer. That's one reason why I'm still running Windows 7. I'll change to Linux if Microsoft tries to get that kind of control with Windows 7.

I think Microsoft should disable third party antivirus software, as this is a function which should properly be integrated with the OS security architecture.
I disagree. It's your PC -- you should be able to use it however you want

I've had Win10 almost since its release. (I held onto Win7 for as long as I could, until the free upgrade to 10 was about to expire.) I really like it. It hasn't given me any problems, and it even boots faster than other versions of Windows (but still not fast enough to suit me). I have lots of 3rd-party software and have never seen anything disappear.

So I just wanted to go on record as being a satisfied user of Win10. (Btw, I'm a computer programmer and often use my machine for work.)

One can simply use a different OS. Security is an OS function, and the mere existence of third party AV software is a relic of the complete lack of security in Windows 9x.

That’s It. I’ve Had Enough! | Nota Bene: Eugene Kaspersky's Official Blog

He has a long list of grievances, one of which is:

Users of Windows 10 have been complaining that the system is changing settings, uninstalling user-installed apps, and replacing them with standard Microsoft ones.

That isn't even the worst of it.

You are always connected to Microsoft - as in, everything on your Win10 machine is automatically sent to, and stored to Microsoft.

When has Microsoft EVER offered such a "robust" program for FREE - let alone an entire OS? That should have been people''s first clue - a free OS from Microsoft...

Oh well.
