  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You don't have to respond to this, for this is just me venting.

Everyone is always asking me what I want to do, or what my major is. To be perfectly honest I don't have a major. And I don't think I want to do anything professional. I just want to update my resume. But the idea of doing something professional scares me to death. People ask me why I am in school, I tell them it is the only way I can get out of town and get off of disability. But when I am done with school, I will go back to work and stock shelves at Walmart or something. People think that is crazy. But they don't understand that the town we live in is not very disabled friendly. I tried to get a job and get off disability but without success. So school was my only option. This kind of blows. All I want to do is work. But I haven't worked for years, so I need to get that degree to update my resume.

And I also need to school to get out of my town. We only have a two year college. And when I am done, I can use my tuition money to help me move to a different city with a 4 year university. They also have better programs for people who are disabled to get back to work. I love my town as well as hate my town. I do not want to move. But in order for me to stop leeching off the government I have to move, for better programs. My family is here, but they are not any help.

I don't know what else to do. I am very upset about this.

Whatever you do avoid student loans many people wish they worked at Walmart rather than having 80K or so debt .

That is probably wise advice.

The biggest problem is when you have 80k in debt but no degree.

So are you currently in school? is it just for general studies (Liberal Arts)?

You know, college isn't for everyone. It used to be highly stressed that you had to go to college or join the military to be anything, but it isn't true anymore. The main reason for that is the internet lol You can learn almost anything you want totally for free.

Did you ever consider trade school? They teach and prepare you to work in a specific trade and that is the main focus. You could learn how to be a mechanic, HVAC Technician, or even a truck driver, depending on the school. It's a lot cheaper than college and takes less time. You will be able to get into a good, hard-working, and honest profession without having to be stuck with an insane amount of debt for a degree you have no interest in actually using.

Yes, I am in school. I am on summer vacation right now but I have been in school since winter. And I will be going back to school in the fall. Right now I am working on my AA degree. So yeah, I am taking liberal arts.

As for trade school, my town that I live in never really offered any trade school. I mean, you can learn accounting. But the trade school is very very limited. I would have to move.

That is true what you are saying about how you don't have to go to school to learn a career. But, it has to do with the town that I live in. I live in a very small town and the only options that people have these days is to go to school. I could work at Walmart or something like that if I could get to work. But unfortunately the transportation is very limited here in my small town. I have agoraphobia. I'm still able to leave the house but I am unable to walk to work. I have to use the bus and the bus schedule is extremely Limited. It works well with school, but it doesn't work well with having a regular job. In places like Spokane or Seattle they have the Paratransit bus that will come and pick you up right at the door. They have a bus here that will pick you up right at your parking lot, but they only work until 3:30 in the afternoon. So it still doesn't work well with trying to get a regular job. But it works very well if you are going to school. So there's a lot of these hiccups that keep me from working, and there are a lot of hiccups for me trying to learn a trade. It would have to be a trade that I was interested in, which I am interested in the trade. But I would have to move out of my small town. And the only way I can do that is by using my tuition money and renting an apartment in a bigger city that has services that can help me.

But thank you very much. Those were good advice. And I should look stuff up on the internet. It's just hard to know what's real and what is fake on the internet.

Maybe it's time to say goodbye to your hometown? Work towards moving all together. Are you able to get a job in the city you go to school so you can save money to move? Might I suggest a restaurant job? It's one of the few non-professional jobs where you can work and move anywhere in the country and be able to find work because the skills are pretty universal. :)

Well, not really. My town isn't really disabled friendly. The biggest city near my town which is an hour away is Spokane. And they are very disabled friendly. When I am outside of my house I get extremely dizzy. But I can still work when I am inside a building.

I do agree with you, however. I am in the process of looking for a place in Spokane. I still get tuition money which helps me. I will use some of that to move to Spokane or Pullman. And once I am in Spokane I will choose a trade. But for now the only option I have is to go to school.

Thank you very much. Your advice is actually very helpful. And I agree with you, I definitely need to say goodbye to my hometown.
