I was reading a good book today-"In the Heart of the Desert The Spirituality of the Desert Fathers and Mothers". I came across an interesting parallel between the "Just for Today" slogan of NA and AA and the teachings of the Desert Fathers.
For Poeman, what belongs and binds us to the past or indeed even to the future also renders us unable to live in the present.
Abba Poeman was asked for whom this saying was appropriate: "Do not be anxious about tomorrow" (Matt 6.34). The old man said: "It is said for the person who is tempted and has little strength, so that such a person may not worry, saying within: 'How long must I suffer this temptation?' That person should rather SAY EACH DAY: 'JUST TODAY'.
