What do you study in human behavioral biology?

Currently we're studying behavioral evolution and the conceptional filters people employ to keep them locked into a particular worldview. It's actually fascinating reading some of the posts here and seeing how many exhibit what is literally textbook behavior. My professor describes the filters as "buckets," and highlights the dangers of being locked within preconceived notions. People will only into their "buckets," not realizing that the buckets don't actually exist. Overall the course is about the interconnection between physiology and behavior and the way that biological, psychological, and neurological elements impact one another to create human behavior.

Many of my professor's past lectures are available on YouTube if you're curious. He's a phenomenal lecturer. He's also incredibly nice. This past week he brought wrapped up bagels with cream cheese to class and tossed them to us when we got an answer correct or made a contribution to the discussion. :) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL848F2368C90DDC3D

^^ I loathed Linear Algebra.

I'm taking a nice medley of technical electives and writing my senior thesis. Woot.

It just started last week & I already feel exactly the same.

What is so bad about linear algebra? I had to take all the way through Calc. II. Believe it or not, I enjoyed Calc. II more than I did Calc. I.

I think the only part I didn't like much about linear algebra was doing limits the long way and dealing with system of equations having 3 variables.

If you have a hard time with the math and your teacher/professor is bad at teaching the material, find one that is good and ask for their help. I had the absolute WORST college trig professor. He was a brilliant man, but was horrible when it came to teaching the material. One of the reasons for this is he really didn't take much time to prepare any of the lessons in advance and would just try to teach from the text book. So I ended up having to rely on the tutors our college had, one of whom was a graduate-level math major. Even they knew how terrible this professor was at teaching math.

your taking 9 courses in one semester?
I knew a guy who was taking 21 credits in a semester, and when I asked him how he was managing it, he said he was just going to get all C's. Obviously he wasn't concerned with getting any scholarships or grants later on.

I'll never understand why many of these colleges try to cram so much into a semester. Even 14 credits per semester can be rough if you're taking a lot of science courses with labs and need to work part-time on the side.

My teacher is great. I'm just not a fan of the class. Different strokes for different folks & all. I'm in the 11th grade. Most kids at other schools aren't taking this class yet.

Whaaaaaat you're taking linear algebra in high school? My high school didn't even offer that! ^_^

One of the reasons I hated that class was because my professor was horrendously bad so every lecture was just a nightmare of matrices and eigenvalues. I was also taking it simultaneously with multivariable calculus so those two together just made my life miserable, not to mention the physics and computer programming classes I was taking. As a matter of fact, just thinking back to that entire semester makes me want to shrivel up and cry.

Yepppp. It's not even the hardest class. There are 4 that are higher. We do get college credit, so that's nice. Younger kids have placed into it. o_O

This is what I'm currently registered for, though I'll likely make some modifications because I've been offered an internship.

Edit: I'll definitely be making changes because the internship puts me over the maximum allowable units for a quarter, so I'll hold off on sharing until I get it sorted. :)

This is what I'm currently registered for, though I'll likely make some modifications because I've been offered an internship.

- Data Science for Politics
- Campaigns, Voting, Media, and Elections
- The Ethics of Elections
- The Federal System: Judicial Politics and Constitutional Law
- Presidential Politics: Race, Gender, and Inequality in the 2016 Election (1 unit seminar)
- Election 2016 (1 unit seminar)
- Carillon (1 unit music class)
- Faculty Choreography (1 unit dance class)

Any bets someone will read this and think there are foo foo classes? I won't make that mistake I still remember some of your 10th grade classes.

Out of curiosity and perhaps to make things clear for some others here what are the prerequisites for the Data Science class?

As noted in the edit above, I have to rearrange my schedule to fit in my internship.

I'll still be keeping the "foo foo" music and dance classes that we're encouraged to take for stress relief and enrichment, haha.

I'm taking 5 flex classes, otherwise known as half-semester classes. I'm doing two in the first half:

English 1301 (3 credits)
Geology 1401 (4 credits)

And two in the second half:

Intro to Computing 1301 (3 credits)
English 1302 (3 credits)
Spanish 1411 (4 credits)

All of this for a total of 17 credits. Geology is in person but all the others are online.

My college only offered courses in that format during the summer. So I ended up having to take an introductory chemistry course during the fall, then General Chem-I during the spring, and General Chem-II as a 6-week course for the first summer semester.

Its not fun, and I don't believe a person learns the material as well in comparison to taking it as a 14-week course because you spend much less time on each module in the course. The only reason I was able to get away with it was I only worked 8-12 hrs. on the weekend at the time and did not have to take Physical Chemistry later on.

I find I retain things pretty well. The reason I'm doing it this way is because I want to shorten the amount of time it takes to get my degree.

I wouldn't be able to do that particular schedule due to all of the writing(English) in conjunction with memorization(Geology, and my lack of knowledge in Spanish). One of the most difficult essays I had to write was in College English II where I was assigned Post-Colonial Criticism and was required to analyze & write about James Joyce's "Eveline" from the Dubliners. It took me 3 weeks to write the 10+ pages using MLA format.
British Lit. was even worse, especially with the professor that was teaching the course: read 20+ pages and quizzed on anything from it in 2 days. Usually involved reading multiple poems the size of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

I just can't do most courses in compressed format, especially ones that involve a lot of writing, physics, higher level math, etc. I guess I'm just slow. :grimacing:

I think some professors do it differently. I choose what classes I want to take for the semester and plan my schedule based on the best professors I can find in my college at ratemyprofessors.com. I'd rather take an 8 week class than a 3 week class. I did my two History classes over the summer and it was brutal, the first one was 3 weeks (May semester is short) and the second one was 5 weeks.

I used that site when I was trying to find a good math professor for trig and still got stuck with a professor I was trying to avoid. Sometimes they swap professors around and you usually don't find out about it until you're sitting there on the first day of the course.
Same thing happened when I enrolled for O-Chem. I. I was looking forward to having a good professor for that course the second time around and ended up with an adjunct who had very little teaching experience and little familiarity with the labs. I had to help her with the labs and she ended up staining part of my lab textbook purple with iodine. I said afterwards, this is why we write up pre-labs, so we're not getting reagents all over our textbooks. When we were doing a lab that involved methane, acetylene, and metal acetylide synthesis, I had to make sure the other professor took time to go through the lab with her, because of how bad things could go with that particular lab.

Instead of getting rid of the professors that have numerous complaints in conjunction with low enrollment for their course, they let them continue teaching. Not to mention they'll let pretty much anyone adjunct that has a masters degree in the related field.
