I have always wanted to be the captain of a ship...a really big ship. The first thing i remember wanting to be was a garbage man. Later in life I wanted to be a teacher. I ended up being a first aid attendant and a chef. I was a craft service person and an assistant catering chef. I have also dabbled in creative home business. Now, I'm teaching cooking classes.
So, you were a chef, huh? That is so cool. In High School one of my best friends wanted to be a chef...dont know if she ever went that route though. She also wanted to own alot of horses and had already picked out the names for them...I wonder if she ever got that horse names Mini something or other? hmmmm...

mle, you teach a cooking class...any valuable tips?

I know, doesn't it? I used to work for an art store near the studios here. And the people that came in for supplies that did special effects for movies were some of the happiest and most interesting artists I got to meet. Yeah, if I were just starting out, that's the kind of art I would try to get into. They look like they have such a good time.

Oh me? I'm still sneezing and coughing and my chest is still a little tender when I breathe deaply. But I'm not letting it slow me down. Thank you for asking. I hope it goes away by Friday. I have to drive to Burbank (an hour away) to David's Bridal to help my sister (hopefully) find a dress. I'm her matron of honor. We were on the internet today over the phone (me on internet, her on the phone, her computer is down) trying to find a location. She's getting married at the end of May and doesn't have a location yet!!! And like me she's paying for her own wedding. That's something my children aren't going to have to deal with. It's hard enough making all the plans but having to foot the entire bill without any help from your parents? What a nightmare.

Tomorrow I have to take my son to the Orthodontist. He broke a bracket over the weekend and they didn't think it was important enough to come in before tomorrow. Poor kid has had this wire flapping around in his cheek since Sunday. ( I clipped it and put some wax on it...so it's not quite as gruesome as it may sound)

The drywall guy is coming Friday to tape and texturize the new wall. Then the construction guy is coming back on Tuesday to put up the shelf and clothing rod in the closet and hang the doors. He's charging extra for the shelf and the clothing rod. He didn't seem to understand that when we paid for a closett we meant a closett and not an empty box with a door on it.

I have to go get the nuckleheads (my children) to take their baths and showers. It's getting to be about that time. I do enjoy my little repreave here on this thread from my life though. Even though it's too brief. (I need a vacation)

Take care...and see you tomorrow I hope. And thanks again for asking after my health. Funny how someone being nice like that just makes everything more bearable.

Well...goodnight friends.

Anybody hear any good jokes lately?

I worked in the film industry as a chef and in another department called first aid/craft service. I found the film industry very hard. Normaly I would work 14 hr days. Once I worked over 24 hrs straight. It got to the point where my cats didn't recognize me any more. Film seems so glamorous, and fun but it's not. There is a way of doing things on set that I didn't respect. If you want to be well thought of and get jobs you have to kiss butt the people who make the most money. I found that I felt like I was in the army there was so much protocol for every little action and circumstance.
Some people really enjoy making their work thier life but I would much rather have a life and work as part of my life.

mle are you French? I had a french friend once that told me "American's live to work. The French work to live" I think about that all the time. American economy supports the workaholic work ethic in this country. Many people find their identity in their work. I always thought the trick to it was to do what you love and be able to make a living at it too.

Was your post because of what I suggested Sophia look into regarding being an artist for the movie industry? Stan Winston, Michael Westmore...all those real creative geniuses that do special effects makeup and creatures for the movies, I didn't think usually worked at the studio for the most part. (unless something's changed since I was in the business). They used to have their own studios or workshops and worked like subcontractors. And the artists that work for them just seem to be having the time of their lives in their chosen profession. They just really seemed content and joyful. To me it's akin to professional ball players...they basically get to play for a paycheck. That seems to be the ideal.

Sorry that your experience working as a chef etc. was a bummer. But, Isn't food service pretty much a bummer anywhere? I've never really met anyone that worked in that field that could honestly say that they enjoyed it. The people I've met, even a chef or two consider it more work than something they actually look forward to.

Guess there are two kinds of people. I work to live. My husband would work if they didn't pay him...he's that passionate about his career. But then he's an artist...so he basically gets paid to draw. Kids draw. Do you think when they're playing with their crayons in kindergarten they fully grasp that they can do this for a living someday and that it's a marketable talent? I think most kids grow up thinking that they have to find a grown up job and make money...and that doing something fun is just not an adult thing to do. I just think it doesn't have to be that way. That's all.

Mle, I know what you mean. My husband works with alot of people that get every last bit of over time they can get. My husband only works over time when it is mandatory. We feel family time is far more important than all the extra material goodies in life. We dont rely on over time and do quite well without it. My family spends the evenings together...work ends after the supper dishes are done for us.

Hi all!

Our little ones (Yohanan, who just turned 7 & Naor, who turned 3 in November) are an endless source of wonder. One of Naor's playmates came to pre-nursery school yesterday with a few garden snails & some lettuce in a box. The snails were a big hit. Naor came home & announced to us that he had to have some snails. Wendy & Da Boyz visited a cousin of hers in Jerusalem yesterday & collected two jumbo-sized garden snails in the cousin's garden. We put them in a box & put in some wilted lettuce. As soon as Naor woke up this morning, he went right to the snails.

Naor: "Daddy, how does a snail go [i.e. what noise does it make]?"

Me: "Snails don't make any noise."

Naor: "Why?"

Me: "Because God must've decided that He wanted snails to be quiet."

At this point Wendy piped in from our bedroom: "Why couldn't He have fixed kids that way?"

Be well!

That was so cute. And, Wendy is right...my girls are teenagers and they blast music from their bedrooms...umm...I used to do the same thing to my parents. I guess we reap what we sow. LOL.

Take care stillsmallvoice.

I did start that post because of the mention of film industry occupations. You are very right about those departments(creative, art, sp.effects) working out of a studio. The people who get to that point in thier carrer have usually put in the time on set, working long hours.
I love working in a kitchen. Aside from getting up a 3am to make breakfast. There were other elements of the work that I did enjoy, but just not the long hours day after day.

My husband also does art as part of his job!

Is your office complete and things back to normal yet?

Oh ya, I'm not French. Nor am i from French Canada! I would like to visit France though! Have you been there?

Hardly. :D The drywall taper cancelled today. He'll be here tomorrow to tape and texturize. Then the construction guy will be back on Tuesday to put in the shelf and doors for the closett and the door that devides the bedroom from the office. Then the carpet guy has to come and repair the carpet. Then we have to paint it all. Whew! Should be done about the middle of next week.

No...I dated a man who lived in France for years. He was such a snob about the French being better than American's in every way. And because of a lot of snide things he said I got to the point where anything French made me really angry. It wasn't until we went to war in Iraq and I met some French Christians on-line that I stopped feeling that way. I just thought your comment about working as part of your life and not your whole life sounded similar to something he was always saying. That is one of the things that that relationship left me with. Thinking about the differences between the French and the Americans. I have to admit...they have a point. I think a great many of us in America do have our priorities a little bit out of whack. We work so hard that we sort of forget that there is purpose and meaning outside of what earns us our keep. But no, I'm not French. Other than a very distant ancestor...Anne Bolyne. My familiy is very American. Some of my ancestors came over on the Mayflower. (That and 2 bucks will buy you a cup of coffee)

So what kind of art does your husband do?

My day was great. I went Birthday shopping for my niece who will be five tomorrow and is having a birthday party. I got her a Barbie...I love shopping for little girls. I love Barbies...I have a curio cabinet full of the collectable type. Tomorrow shall be a blast...a five year olds birthday party...she give me a formal invitation over the phone...she said there will be cake and ice cream so I surely must come to celebrate with her. Fun, fun, fun...also, got her a faux cell phone that talks..that should drive my brother, her Dad insane until the batteries poop out.

Catch you guys later...
