  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

good question DT. In answering this, I would first take into account what Jesus said about this, specifically, how having lustfull thoughts are equally as culpable as commiting adultery itself. When someone masturbates, it is obvious that lust is involved. And if someone is married, it is certain that this is a mortal sin because they are essentially committing adultery, and as the Church says, it is clearly disordered. To those who are unmarried, I am less sure about, but I'd still say yes if, as you say, the 3 conditions of mortal sin is met. The Church says that it is grave matter, so that is met.

Consider these verses, DT:

[bible]1 Corinthians 6:18-20[/bible]

St. Paul says that the sexual sins are of a more serious nature.
Also, lust is involved which Our Lord clearly stated was sinful.
And think of how one's view of women would be changed by frequently indulging in this sin? They turn from sisters in Christ to mere sexual objects for mental fantasies.
Take those three together and it sounds pretty grave to me!

1 Corinthians 6:18-2018 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Yea, I guess you're right. I think I'm just falling into the trap of "so many people do it, therefore it can't be that bad."
