For some reason there seems to be an increase of trolling lately. Once you see they aren't really interested in discussion, stop. Don't play their game. The best tactic is to treat them like spam phone calls...ignore them! By doing this you will help make CF a more interesting, constructive and friendly place for all.

Troll:
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. Who tries to deliberately anger people online to get a reaction. (Sound familiar?)

When you do this, you give the trolls the attention that they crave. You're responding in the way that the troll wants you to respond. You show they have gotten you upset over something that they posted.

We need to be careful not to judge people's motives. It's OK to judge their works. But normally a troll is someone you disagree with but cannot refute these days.

I agree sometimes that may be true, but other times it is painfully obvious that it isn't a discussion that is taking place. I think most of us can tell the difference between someone rattling our cage vs someone who we just disagree with. In any case, declining to participate when you suspect a troll doesn't hurt the other person, the nonproductive dialog just ends. This at least keeps people from becoming too uncivil and those arguments never convince anyone anyway. But I certainly won't argue with you about it.
