  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You guys already lose one round. The question under discussion is the second round. It will continue.

A theory constructed by so many intelligent people in so many careers for such a long time, can still be punched easily by a lay person like me. Shame to the theory.

you know, from what I've read, you haven't actually punched any holes. You've only misunderstood, which people have tried to help you with, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Do you want to go to details with me too? Which issue are you talking about? We can go from there to see if I misunderstood or not.

Well, why don't you start by explaining what holes you think you have punched in "round one". I have not seen a single argument of yours hold up at all.

Umm... okaaay... ?????

I must have missed a few posts, but I don't recall any victory, much less to YECism.

Juvenissun, my brother in Christ... what is it that troubles you so much about the theory of evolution? Why is an ultra-literal reading of Genesis so important to you? Our interpretations of Genesis or our belief (or disbelief) in evolution have absolutely nothing to do with the gospel.

In this forum (may be others too), I have not seen anyone openly admitted losing a debate (except me). In order to tell who is winning, you have to read the post carefully and understand the content. This is certainly unfortunate. In fact, there is nothing to be shame about in admitting the loss. Particularly very few people knows who other persons really are. I always think this forum is not the place to determine win or lose, but to learn. A good sign is that I do see people are learning even they do not admit the loss.

I am not troubled by the theory of evolution at all. I just want to debate on its validity. If I failed, I will not feel bad at all. I am in academics. In order to convince me, I need to be convinced on details. So far, I haven't see any real meat yet. In fact, that is what I am looking for.

So, why are you going around claiming a victory in some "round one"?

The point is that you claimed there are holes in evolution, but have not shown a hole that I can see, other than in your understanding of what evolution really says. And, whether you actually agree with evolution, that part can be remedied with a little bit of reading.

Impressive. Thanks for this eye-opening (and quick) post.

Where is the one for Baptist? I am a Baptist and I do not even know what is the stand of my denomination on this issue.

I really wonder how many congregations in the named denominations know this specific stand of their churches.

While this isn't an official stance from the higher ups of the Baptist community, Baylor University, a very well respected Baptist university released this statement:

"Evolution, a foundational principle of modern biology, is supported by overwhelming scientific evidence and is accepted by the vast majority of scientists. Because it is fundamental to the understanding of modern biology, the faculty in the Biology Department at Baylor University, Waco, TX, teach evolution throughout the biology curriculum. We are in accordance with the American Association for Advancement of Science's statement on evolution. We are a science department, so we do not teach alternative hypotheses or philosophically deduced theories that cannot be tested rigorously."

So take that for what you will.

It's not about winning a debate, it's about the truth.

Evolution is statistical fact.

We don't know what Jesus thought about the literary genre Genesis 1 and 2 were written in.

But we do know, with nearly absolute certainty, what the ancient Israelites would have thought about it. Why should we read it differently than they did?
