  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was listening recently to a philosopher describing his understanding of the meaning of life. He summed it all up as the pursuit of knowledge, the enjoyment of pleasure and living a life of virtue.

Based on simple self-observation and making it a bit more personal, I say my three meanings would be (1) enjoyment and love of family and friends (2) pursuit of interesting and satisfying work and (3) seeking God.

I'm interested to hear other peoples thoughts on how they would define the top three things that give their life meaning.

Those are actually quite good, however my order would be different.
1) Seeking a richer relationship with God
2) Enjoyment and love of family and friends
3) Pursuit of interesting and satisfying activities - not limited to work.

1) Not dying

Well, I'm pretty sure you're heading for failure on that one

Dying is not a problem. Getting born is the problem. Life is suffering.

Giving a drink to a thirsty child, or tying child's shoelace, or showing compassion for a sick drunk lying in a gutter have given meaning to my life. Of course, others have done much better, but at least I am not a serial killer.

I guess mine would be:
1. Love God with all my heart and to obtain everything He has to give
2. To love others and fulfill my destiny
3. To gather as much riches as I can in heaven

Being Happy.

The hard part is explaining how you go about it. Some of you seek god for happiness (I think/Presume) others have identified pleasure as a source One of you mentioned not dying which makes sense, more time more chance of happiness.
