I don't normally care for science fiction/fantasy, but there are two exceptions that actually turns out are my favorites. First and foremost, Frank Herbert. His Dune series I must have read a dozen times all through school. I also read JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings during that time as well. Of course these guys were and still are very popular writers. For a number of years now I have ever so gradually, when I have time, still read their works free online. Links below.

Read Herbert free online. Read Tolkien free online.

I love Dune but I can't get into Dune Messiah. I did enjoy the latest Dune movie and waiting for the second part. David Lynch's 1984 Dune is crazy and unless you've read the books, nearly unwatchable, unless you have melange or some other ... uhh... mind altering substance :p

The original Dune had some pretty perverse elements that thankfully were removed in latter editions. The prequel books were much better than the original ones I think (written by Herbert's son and a coauthor). The later Herbert books dune Messiah and Children of Dune I think fell short. However, His son ended the series well and at least tied some things up.
