Journey through Ruth
The book of Ruth is quiet short with only 4 chapters with a total of 85 verses.
In chapter 1 we get little history on where Ruth comes from and how she ends up in Bethlehem. Here mother Naomi has two sons and Ruth is married to one of them. Over time, Naomi's husband dies then both of her sons die leaveing just her and her two daughter-in-laws. Naomi tells them to go back to their families where they can be taken care of. One of them goes and Ruth is persistant to stay with Naomi.
1:16,17 "But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the LORD do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.""
This is well known verse used for weddings and those in love. It shows Ruth's commitment to Naomi.
Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem where Naomi is very depressed at the state in which they are living and all that she has lost. In capter 2 Ruth goes out and starts to work in the field of Boaz. She does this without consent from Boaz. When Boaz finds her and talks to her, he shows compasion and kindness to her rather than kicking her out of his fields. Boaz gives her work and food to eat and sends food home for her mother-in-law. When Ruth talks to Naomi and tells her what happened she is pleased and Ruth works there for some time.
In chapter 3 Naomi encourages Ruth to seek out Boaz as a husband and as someone to redeem them. Ruth takes a chance and visits Boaz in the night and makes her request to him. He says that he is not the closest of kin and if they will not do it, he will because all know that Ruth is a women of virtue. He promises to follow through on the matter and sends Ruth home with more provisions for her and her mother-in-law.
Chapter 4 starts with Boaz going in to the city to talk to Naomi's kinsman. He states what has happened and asks if anyone will redeem them. The one that is a closer kinsman than Boaz can not do so, so Boaz says he will. So Boaz buys Naomi's land back and redeems her and her daughter-in-law. He also purchases Ruth to be his wife. Ruth is barren at first and can not produce children for Boaz. They take the matter to the Lord and she brings for children.
Ruth is in the line of generations that lead to Christ. The son of Ruth is Obed which is the father of Jesse which is the father of David.
Ruth is a short book but is filled with many good principles and a great story of faith, devotion and love. The book also shows how the old Mosaic Law was to deal with those who lost their estates and how they could be regained. The story of Ruth and Boaz has some similarities with Christ's relationship with the church.
