He and I played Bartok's Six Rumanian Dances, the Beethoven Romance in F Major, and Paganini's Moto Perpetuo together.

I remember him as a very quiet, very precocious kid. He was between nine and ten when I was his accompanist, and I remember him as a prodigiously gifted violinist.

I don't have fond memories of his mother, though. She may have gotten the violin virtuouso that she wanted; but I swear that woman stole his childhood.

What kind of parent gets their kid up at 4:30 in the morning to practice two hours before going to school?

When did I stop accompanying Joshua Bell? When I told his mother exactly what I thought of her getting him up at 4:30 am so he could practice two hours before going to school.

You know -- when I was in junior high and high school, I practiced the piano at least four hours every day, Saturdays and Sundays and Christmas and Easter included -- but I still had some time to do normal teenage things like dating, socializing with friends, and joining some clubs at school. Joshua Bell didn't get much of that kind of stuff -- and even to this day, I think I should have been more emphatic with his mother about his being able to have some semblance of a normal life.
