Let me assist those who are demonstrating a misunderstanding of what Purgatory is:
CCC#1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.
That's Purgatory.

That's what MacArthur described.

In the large lens of catholic doctrine it is much more and you know it, tell me Polo why is it that indulgences can be applied to those detained in purgatory from the treasury of merits? if it is not a place.
It seems you are describing purgatory as when God's fiery vision is set upon our soul it is cleansed, but it is much more when it's viewed with associated dogmatic doctrines such as indulgences.

this is stupid, who cares? Protestants don't view MacArthur as some infallible teacher of doctrine. Showing that he somehow believes in the Catholic understanding of Purgatory, does nothing. I don't see the point of this thread.

Whether it's a place or not or whether it takes "time" or not (the Church has not settled either question whether you would insist so or not) God is outside of time and can apply any prayers we give for the souls in Purgatory to the "instant" they are purified or to whatever temporal "duration" they might pass through the purifying encounter, place, portal, experience, or whatever. At the end of the day, I say (for perhaps the 4th time now? :)) MacArthur's sermon was compatible and reflective of Catholic teaching.

Anyone hear his sermon this morning? It's appropriately titled "What we will be like." If I had just read a transcript, I probably would have assumed it was a sermon from a Catholic priest. He went on about how we've received Christ, but it's the "first fruits" and we still have sin to deal with, and eventually we'll be perfect in heaven with no sinful blemishes. I kid you not. His whole bent was that we must be detached from sin completely to get into heaven, and he even cited Revelation 21:27 to boot!!! It's not the first time he taught this.

Here is the MP3 from this morning (the link will last for a couple weeks.)

Now, mind you there is no small irony that this is the same guy who says Catholicism would fall apart without Purgatory when he unknowingly teaches essentially the same thing. He is truly a butterfly pinned to the wall.
^_^

It's interesting because John MacArthur slams the Catholic Church as satanic for teaching the same thing he is teaching here! And because he is remarkably influential in some protestant circles and among some people here for those views.
