John as Elijah

No need to.

When the Father grants understanding of His Word, He Grants Freely, with no reproach.

i.e. there is no contradiction at all in His Word, His Meaning, His Wisdom, His Plan, His Purpose in Christ Jesus.

John was a metaphor for Elijah whose role he fulfilled.

How do we reconcile these verses?

That's something of a recurring theme in the new testament. Not the outright denial as John had it, but to accept on faith what is in front of us. Jesus did not tell Peter that he was the son of God, but asked who he thought he was.

John the baptist denys he"s the actual Elijah because more actually he's coming in the spirit and wisdom of Elijah not the actual person. Luke 1:17

YLT and he shall go before Him, (in the spirit and power of Elijah), to turn hearts of fathers onto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom and righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.

How do we reconcile these verses?

Hi the Bible God knows all the outcomes in advance and is not waiting for us to make our choices He knew what we would choose before we chose it yet somehow our free will is evident as we live our lives constantly making choices. Prophetically Elijah does come before the LORD is come as king over all the earth. The prophets knew the stone would be rejected by the builders and Jerusalem would be a desolation and had they recognized Jesus John would have been considered as Elijah for he came in the same spirit as Elijah wearing the mantle and preaching repentance. In Rev we see the two witnesses who are on the scene and certainly one of those is Elijah and he is opposing the antichrist for 42 months and as john will be preaching to turn the hearts of the people towards God. John the baptist was a forerunner for the Messiah like Elijah will be when the two witnesses are revealed.

John knew himself as John. Christ knew that John was the fulfillment of that passage.
