Creative Slide with Jon Acuff: 06 - How to be creative on demand

Here are my cliff notes..

1.) Collect ideas. Gather as many ideas as possible. "We don't have writer's block; we have idea bankruptcy. Always be on the lookout for fresh ideas; not for the sake of plagarism but for inspiration. Writers sometimes call these writing prompts.

2.) Look for patterns. "The definition of creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye."-Dorthy Parker.

It's the ability to collect ideas and see the relationship between them that noone else has seen.

3.) Shape the story. Research has shown there's a part of our brain that processes information in a way that when we hear something that we've already heard then our brains automatically shut off and chunk those ideas. In other words, we are constantly trying to relate what we hear with something old and therefore try to ignore it. Our job as creators is to surprise our audiences so that this doesn't happen. We must find angles to tell stories in ways that our listeners are not expecting. Remember: Surprise opens people up. Shock shuts people down.

4.) Create it. Methods to use include: Timers, do one thing at a time at one place at a time, leave the work (occasionally we must take a break doing something that's not related to keep ourselves fresh)

5.) Edit it. Our ability to reduce something makes the piece better. Let your ideas be concentrated.
