Jesus called James and John Sons of Thunder in Mark 3:17.

Why?

Probably because of their burning zeal.

Luke 9:
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

Only a couple of verses later:
51When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55But he turned and rebuked them. 56And they went on to another village.

After the Cross, John experienced a change of personality. He called himself the disciple whom Jesus love (John 13:23).
Wiki:
The word "love" appears 57 times in the Gospel of John, more often than in the other three gospels combined.[21] Additionally, it appears 46 times in the First Epistle of John.[21]

After Jesus' ascension, the Holy Spirit took hold of John and softened his heart. He became a lot more loving. Before he died, he wrote the thunderous Book of Revelation :)
