Ok. For a start it its better to look at the passage as a whole, rather than your suggested little 666!

At the end of John 6, Jesus is teaching his followers about remaining in the faith..

I think (Please read John 6:25- 70) Jesus was not only talking to the disciples, but calls each of us who refer to ourselves as "Christians" not to be half-hearted or luke-warm Christians.

Being a Christian can be challenging and not always easy, but if we (like the eleven) realise how precious the gift of grace is (v- 67-69) then we will be willing to give our whole lives and be self-sacrificing followers.

The others who werent willing to sacrifice their lives for Jesus decided to go there own way;

as do many luke-warm Christians when faced with something which may seem too challenging and easier to run away from...

There will be seeds that fall by the way side, and there will be seeds that wither and die.

He was speaking of the Holy Eucharist:

John 6:52-66 RSVA The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" (53) So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; (54) he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (55) For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. (56) He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. (57) As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. (58) This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." (59) This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Caper'na-um. (60) Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" (61) But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? (62) Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? (63) It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (64) But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. (65) And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." (66) After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him.

He was teaching in the synagogue I agree, but it does say "many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him." I just thought it was interesting that that particular verse was John 6:66.
sometimes its best to remain simple then make something so complex. I found it interesting

Did you ever notice that verse. John 6:66 "From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him." NIV
I'm not saying its not a coincidence I just thought it was worth posting.:D
Coincidence has nothing to do with it. Not only did I notice this a few years ago but one day it dawned  on me to add up the numbers (6+6+6=18) and go through the Bible and read every 18th verse. For the verse in Revelation stated here is the wisdom of the saints and it begged the question, How is this number the wisdom of the saints? The answer is that the answer is found where the wisdom of the saints is written, God's Word.
Now not every verse lends itself to this subject, however in every book written by John every verse 18 lends itself to it. Just look at Revelation 13:18
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Now do the study, look at every 18th verse in every book that is written by John and report your findings here.
Note that every verse will relate to a falling away and to some charateristic atribute of the antichrist.
As a side note look at the whole 18th chapter of the Gospel of John. See how it gives explicit detail of Judas' betrail? Coincidence? No, Inspired direction of the Holy Spirit of God.
My sorce is that of the KJV BTW. Other versions may have altered the verses.

These verses line up in several catagories that may relate to Rev 13:18.
That Jesus is the Son of God.
That you must believe that Jesus is God in the flesh.
That you are a sinner that needs a savior.
The very elect denying their association with Christ.
Christ's betrayal by a "friend".
Recognition that AntiChrist is in the world.
Assurance that Christ will not let the man of sin touch us or better, not allow us to be won over to his side.

Here is all the 18th verses found in Revelation.

1
18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

2
18 "To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:
These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

3
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

9
18 A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths.

11
18 The nations were angry; and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your saints and those who reverence your name,
both small and great--
and for destroying those who destroy the earth."

13
18 This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

14
18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, "Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth's vine, because its grapes are ripe."

16
18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.

17
18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth."

18
18 "Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, 'Was there ever a city like this great city?'

19
18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, small and great."

21
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.

22
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.

The center verse of the center chapter of the KJV. Psalms 118:8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man .

Also the chapter before Psalms 118 is the shortest chapter in the Bible.
The chapter after Psalms 118 happens to be the longest chapter.
