The man in mankind refers to humanity. It is a cognate to German 'Mensch' or Dutch/Afrikaans 'Mens'.
The gender is a completely different word, cognate to German 'Mann' or Dutch/Afrikaans 'Man'.
This merely shows lack of education, from a university no less. Rather than jumping on some gender-outrage bandwagon, they should rather use this as an opportunity to educate people on the words' basic etymology and origin. This way we can rather focus on our humanity that the word mankind implies, instead of fighting pointless and divisive gender-struggles.
