Who here has a problem with the way that Joan speaks to God in a disrespectful way?
This is a way that people can understand how God might work.

Do you pray to god nice all the time?

She sees God regularly, he makes demands of her she doesn't like.
She is acting as normal people act.

Should she drop to her knees and sling praiseful adjectives that don't even come close to describe his beauty? Wail in his presence?

I like the humor and mystical presence the show portrays God as.

Remember God did not come to Joan at a time she was most devout.
He came to her after her brother had his accident and she didn't know if he was going to live. She is not a born again personality. She is a real person living in the real world. And further more doing what God has told her has not
benefited her life. It got her in trouble in school(several times.) It put her with a Murderer, Befriending several hard personalities to get along with.
The worst problem it caused was to get her commited to a mental hospital
for a few months.

Not the easy life.

I really like this show.
as far as how she talks to God sometimes. I know I myself have said to God "come on! you have to be kidding me"

its just human reaction to God handing us things that we dont think we can handle, but we end up being able to, which is very much what happens in the show.

They have just put God in a tangible form, but I think have been pretty close to Gods nature as i understand him.

And Joan verbalizes things we have all felt and thought in out minds.

Its not perfect, but I definetly am confortbale with it as a Christian

I do think it shows how God connects events and people and the show can teach us how our actions and words can affect others.

Who here has a problem with the way that Joan speaks to God in a disrespectful way?

No. I find how Joan to be a realistic character. She's a modern teenager and how she speaks to God sometimes is very human and very normal. I know I've often felt how she feels and I'm no more perfect than she is, so I can relate to her struggles.

All in all, I love the show. I think its very intelligently written and I enjoy watching it with my family.

i don't pray nicely all the time...
and i doubt every person prays nicely all the time.
and even if you do think you "speak nicely", i very much doubt anyone is that compliant (meaning although you're words may be sweet, sometimes there is still a bit a resistance in your heart).

and so i assume that this is just an accurate depiction of how it is in real life.

Thanks for all the responses.

I guess I've always had a "fear and reverence" approach to God. As if I were speaking to a King or Queen, yet I see God to be greater than any King or Queen.

God deserves to be talked to as a king, being that God is the King of Kings and Lord of lords. But God doesn't ask us to do this. He wants an honest & open relationship. Would we expect 2 year olds to talk to a king properly?
We are but preschoolers compared to him. We hide nothing from God so why
not express what you are feeling.
I am teaching my child to pray, but also to express their feelings.
I have said something funny while praying, to show them that God accepts us as we are. God has a sense of humor.
He understands our strengths and weaknesses.
You can rant and rave about something you think he did wrong. But in the end he still loves you.:groupray:
So, talking to God with your emotions is what God asks us to do. Open and honest.

I like the actors in it too...they seem very real.
The reply thing cut out what I orginally said which was that I thought the show mirrored our lives as christians because everytime me disobey God it is like Joan talking back to God only we do it in a non-verbal way.:)

I talk to Jesus as if hes my friend. I get mad at him sometimes, angry even..and i know he forgives me! and i'm not even a teenager. i think the portrayal of how Joan talks to God is extremely accurate!!! I really enjoy this show, its one of my favorites!

I don't think it represents the relationship Christians have to their Lord & Heavenly Father, but I think it is an enjoyable show which explores questions of faith and morality. If I was involved in youth ministry, or my kid/s were older, I'd consider using it as a discussion starter. I think it draws out loads of issues which can be the basis of a deeper conversation.

That said, I hope people without a Christian influence are not going to think that "that's all there is to Christianity"... I think the show is more multi-faith than Christian.

Cheers,
Ruby

anyone see last nights show? I think it was one of the better ones. I was wondering when the father would stop being so bitter. I was so happy he suggested andy coming to live with him and seemed to finally find some forgiveness.
