  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

And, by the way, questioning literally means to "feel or express doubt about something, raise objections to something." Maybe the better word, if you want it, is "inquisitive".
That is not what it "literally" means. I might be "a meaning", but it is neither the primary nor literal meaning.

Question:
Origin
Late Middle English: from Old French question (noun), questionner (verb), from Latin quaestio(n-), from quaerere ‘ask, seek’.

It literally means to ask and seek.

Matthew 7:7-12

Thanks for the suggestion, but it wasn't a better word. I was using the exact word I intended to use.

Not only is it OK to question the Lord, Christ tells us that we should.

Your logic is sound on simple grounds. But when it comes to having relationship with God, who is so above what we can understand and know, at least in this reality, there is no testing it or examining it in any meaningful way. It's almost ludicrous, like a baby who is curled up in mother's belly yet it wants to test or examine something before she will accept it.

We have no meaningful ability to question anything of substance, at least while here. That's why it's called "to believe in God".

And, by the way, questioning literally means to "feel or express doubt about something, raise objections to something." Maybe the better word, if you want it, is "inquisitive".

No it does not. You explained what question, a noun, means. Questioning, a verb, is different.

Questioning - a verb, not a noun - is "to feel or express doubt about something, to raise objections to something." (Even as a noun question also means - a doubt about the truth or validity of something.)

But who am I to tell you anything, when you are a guy who's questioning stuff.

The Lord says to reason together with Him and of that Abraham is an example Genesis 18:22-33. The Bareans searched the scripture to see if what they were hearing was the truth. Whether a noun or a verb questioning is everyone's responsibility to find the answer to what is being revealed as either true or untrue. To not question is to be led by the blind or else to quench the spirit's lead to investigate further. Either way it is to see and hear that is being investigated or avoided.

Why? Have you never questioned the canon? I'm pretty sure that any Christian who has ever lived would have done so. The Bible is riddled with apparent discrepancies. Are we to ignore them like idiots?
I have embraced simplicity. No denominations or teachers. I just follow a simple path. I put my faith in the NT, in the words of Christ and the epistles.

I don't see how one could do that. The words of the NT, Christ, and the epistles command us to meet together. Meeting together and having teachers is a fundamental part of being a Christian.

Strictly speaking denominations are not necessary. I spent many years at a "non-denominational" congregation. (Looking back I realise that it really wasn't any different to a "denominational" church.)
However it's not possible to live a life faithful to the NT, Christ, and the epistles without meeting together and being under a teaching ministry.

You would be surprised what a person can do once they put their mind to it. My teachers are the scriptures.

I think you missed my point. I didn't mean to say it was not possible because it was extremely difficult. I meant that it is not logically possible. It's impossible.

You can't say that you live your life by the scriptures, and then say that you do something that goes against the heart and word of the scriptures. This is what you are doing if you claim that you don't live in community with other Christians.

There are no "lone Christians". If you are not in community with other Christians, then you are not living a life that if faithful to the scriptures.

Whenever you figure out which denomination is perfect, without error, let me know. Perhaps then i'll listen to teachers.

The more others try to tear down my faith, the more peace i gain inside.

God did not give us a heavy yoke like He did the OC Jews. His commands are easy to understand and learn. Doing the word is where we should direct our attention, but not direct it onto teachers. Its my opinion that people need teachers to learn how not to be a doer of the word. Like the apostle Paul told Timothy, a day will come when people no longer heed sound doctrine, but instead they heap teachers to themselves, so they can hear what they want to hear, instead of hearing the truth.

@greenguzzi

It occured to me that you might think im arrogant. However, please consider that im looking at a multitude of competing denominations and theologies. Therefore, i figure i can teach myself at least as good as they can. There are many false teachers leading many astray, in my opinion.

Also, back in the Apostles day, they didnt have bibles and so people needed teachers. In these last days however, we should be our own teacher.
